A young girl beloved by her village sets out through a dark forest to bring food to her ailing grandmother, wearing the red velvet hood that has become her namesake. A cunning wolf intercepts her along the winding path, races ahead to the grandmother's cottage, and devours the old woman before disguising himself in her bed. When the girl arrives and notices something terribly wrong, the wolf strikes again — but a timely rescue by a woodcutter splits the beast open and restores both grandmother and granddaughter to safety.
