OpenAI's ChatGPT ads cross a $1B annualized run rate in about 200 days and self-serve buying opens across India and EMEA; the FTC and 22 states sue Amazon over alleged shill bids in its ad auction; the EU designates ChatGPT a regulated search engine; and Instagram starts throttling unlabeled AI profiles.
Monday, August 31, 2026. Jack King on the day AI advertising grew up and the day two regulators went after the machinery underneath it. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads has crossed a billion dollars in annualized revenue run rate roughly 200 days after its first US test, and it opened self-serve buying to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Hours later the FTC and 22 states sued Amazon over what they call a secret ad surcharge scheme built on an "invented auction participant." Brussels made ChatGPT the first AI chatbot designated a Very Large Online Search Engine under the DSA — which comes with a public ad repository. Instagram began demoting AI-generated profiles that don't disclose themselves, landing squarely on top of EU AI Act Article 50. Plus the Pentagon puts ChatGPT and Grok in front of 1.7 million users, and OpenClaw 2.0 ships an agent permission system.
