What has changed, and changed remarkably fast, is our ability to actually catch any of it. And in some parts of the world, that shift is not a future story. It is happening on rooftops right now, at a pace that would have sounded fanciful ten years ago.
Welcome back to The Next Biz Thing. I am Markus J. Diplama, and this is the show where we go looking for the companies building the world we are about to live in. Today we are heading to Vietnam, to a company that has spent the better part of a decade putting sunlight to work across factories, farms, and family homes. The company is Vietnam Solar, and this is a story about what happens when a country with extraordinary natural advantages meets a business willing to do the unglamorous work of making the technology actually land.
Let me set the context, because Vietnam is a genuinely fascinating place for this conversation. It is one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia. Manufacturing has expanded enormously. Industrial parks have multiplied. And all of that growth carries an electricity bill that rises every single year. At the same time, Vietnam is blessed with something a lot of industrialised countries would love to have. Sunshine. Long, consistent, high intensity sunshine across most of the country, particularly in the south. It is one of the most naturally suited places on earth for solar generation.
So you have rising energy demand, abundant sunlight, and falling equipment costs, all converging at once. The pieces are on the table. What is needed is someone to assemble them properly. That is the work Vietnam Solar does.
The company was established on the eighth of August, 2018, which puts them at well over seven years in the market. They operate in two capacities that usually sit with separate companies. They are an official distributor of solar equipment, and they are an EPC contractor. EPC stands for engineering, procurement, and construction, which in plain terms means they design the system, source the components, and build the installation.
Holding both roles matters more than it might sound. A distributor knows equipment. They know which inverter is reliable in high humidity, which panel degrades slowly, which battery chemistry suits the local climate. An EPC contractor knows installation. They know how a real roof behaves, how a factory's electrical infrastructure is laid out, how a system performs after three monsoon seasons. When one company holds both kinds of knowledge, the design decisions get better, because the person specifying the equipment is the same person who will have to make it work on site.
Their reach across Vietnam is substantial. Three branches, covering Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa, and the Mekong region. Three warehouses. More than fifty sales points around the country. Over a thousand partners nationwide. And behind it, a team of more than fifty engineers. That last number is the one I would pay attention to, because solar is fundamentally an engineering business. Anyone can sell a panel. Designing a system that produces what it promised, safely, for twenty five years, on a specific building, in a specific climate, is engineering.
Let me talk about their product range, because it is broader than most people assume when they hear solar. Panels and inverters, of course. But also lithium battery storage, which is the piece that turns solar from a daytime supplement into something closer to genuine energy independence. They do full turnkey EPC projects for commercial and industrial clients. They provide operations and maintenance, including panel cleaning, which sounds trivial until you learn how much output a dusty array quietly loses. And they build solar water pumping systems for agriculture, which for a farmer in the Mekong Delta means irrigation that runs on sunlight rather than diesel.
Now here is the piece I find most interesting, because it addresses the single biggest barrier in this entire industry. They offer an ESCO model. ESCO stands for energy service company, and the principle is elegant. The customer does not pay the upfront capital cost of the system. The solar company finances and installs it, and gets paid out of the energy savings the system generates.
Think about what that unlocks. The classic objection to solar has never really been about whether it works. It is that a factory owner is asked to spend a very large amount of money today against savings that arrive slowly over many years. That capital could go into machinery, inventory, hiring. Even when the maths clearly favours solar, the cash flow argues against it. An ESCO arrangement dissolves that objection entirely. The business gets cleaner, cheaper power without a capital outlay, and the provider carries the risk of the system performing. It also aligns everyone's incentives beautifully, because if the system underperforms, the provider feels it directly.
On credentials, the company holds three ISO certifications: 9001 for quality management, 45001 for occupational health and safety, and 14001 for environmental management. Holding all three is not common, and the safety one deserves particular mention. Solar installation involves working at height on industrial roofs with live electrical systems. A certified safety management system tells you the company treats the wellbeing of its installers as a system to be managed rather than a matter of luck. They also hold the construction and electrical operation licences required for this work.
Then there are the manufacturer partnerships. Vietnam Solar is an official distributor for more than twenty international brands, and the names are the serious ones. Panasonic. Huawei. BYD. Trina. Risen. Aiko. Sigenergy. Manufacturers of that calibre are selective about who carries their products and represents them in a market, because a bad installation damages the brand along with the customer. Being appointed an official distributor by twenty of them is a form of vetting that happened before you ever heard of the company. And it matters practically too, because official channels mean genuine warranty coverage, which over a twenty five year asset life is not a small consideration.
The track record numbers are what you would hope for. More than three thousand installations. Over one hundred megawatt peak deployed. And the figure that gives it meaning: more than eighty four thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide avoided annually. Eighty four thousand tonnes, every year, continuing for decades, from work already completed. Their client list spans Toyota dealerships, pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, and industrial facilities across the country, alongside a great many homes.
I want to say something about how they describe themselves, because it is unusual and I think it is sincere. Their stated philosophy centres on the idea that reputation is worth more than gold, and they talk about karma and heartfelt action as guiding principles. They speak about sharing value with customers, partners, communities, and society, and they name employee happiness as a measure of success alongside customer satisfaction.
You could read that as marketing language. I would argue it is doing something more specific in this industry. Solar is a business where the customer cannot easily evaluate the product. You cannot tell by looking whether the array on your roof was designed well. You find out over ten or fifteen years. In a market like that, the seller's integrity is not a soft attribute. It is the main thing protecting the buyer. A company that puts reputation at the centre of its identity is naming exactly the right value for the work it does.
Their vision runs to 2030, aiming to be a leading force bringing renewable energy to every household and enterprise in Vietnam. And recent expansions of their partnerships with Huawei and Panasonic suggest the momentum is real rather than aspirational.
Let me close with the wider picture. The energy transition is often discussed in terms of policy summits and national targets. But it does not actually happen in conference halls. It happens one roof at a time, one factory at a time, through companies willing to survey a building, size a system, negotiate a warranty, train an installer, and come back to clean the panels two years later. That work is not glamorous, and it is where the transition either succeeds or does not.
Vietnam Solar has been doing exactly that work since 2018, in a country where the sunlight is abundant, the demand is climbing, and the opportunity is enormous. Three thousand installations is three thousand decisions by real people and real businesses to generate their own power, made easier because someone made it straightforward.
