Women who have been told repeatedly to "get your mammogram" may have been misled. For decades, women have been advised to "get your mammogram" as an early detection approach. According to Dr. Nyjon Eccles, women have been misled. Based on research, Dr. Eccles states that mammography screening doesn't lead to survival advantage. He cites research results that show for every 2,000 women who are screened over 10 years, one life will be saved, 10 women will receive unnecessary treatment, and 200 women will receive false positive results. Cancers generate heat because they are highly metabolic and cause increased blood circulation. The screening tool does not involve compression of the breasts, nor does it use radiation. It is able to pick up on potential cancer before it can be seen, structurally, by a mammogram. Another benefit is that thermography screening isn't impeded by dense breast tissue, and therefore can be used in younger women who may have a family history or genetic risk. While mammography may produce false positives, Dr. Eccles has seen thermography result in 90-95% accuracy. He does caution, however, that thermography shouldn't be used as a diagnostic tool; rather, its focus should be screening and early detection. Just because heat is detected, doesn't mean it's cancer -- it could be an inflammatory response. That said, any chronic or persistent inflammatory issues should also be followed up with additional diagnostic investigation. Listen as Dr. Eccles joins Dr. Taz to discuss more about why thermography is a better option to mammography, as well as his development of ThermoCheck®, a computer-assisted Breast Thermography system.
