As Rahab is spared, this chapter narrates how an entire race is spared from the slaughter. Israel now battle a coalition of kings and victoriously complete the southern campaign. The northern campaign is larger in degree but it will not impede the conquest of Canaan. Finally, God has already revealed through Moses that He will clear the nations, only little by little and not by a swift conquest (Deut. 7:22). What Joshua has achieved is eliminating all the distinguished kings, to ensure that there will be no more strong alliances. The land is then ready for the tribes to settle and take up their inheritance.
