You can act today in ways that echo into eternity. May the spirit use it to help you see, savor, and sing the beauty of God in the crucified and risen Jesus Christ. 00:00:39.790 --> 00:01:05.770 So he starts out with an example from nature. 37. You foolish person, what you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or some other grain. Then he begins with that nature argument and says that you think the body God's gonna give you is just like the one that's going to be buried? 00:01:05.770 --> 00:01:14.985 No. That doesn't even happen in nature. What do you see when a seed is buried? It dies. It's covered with dirt. 00:01:15.225 --> 00:01:32.840 But then what happens? New life. New life springs up from the seed, and it's life that is in continuity with the seed that was sown. It's life that comes as a direct result of sowing that seed. But the life isn't just like the seed. 00:01:32.840 --> 00:01:48.165 Right? And it's not that a much bigger seed pushes its way up from the ground. That would be strange. It's different, and it's different in a spectacular way. So think about all the little seeds that were sown in the field behind us. 00:01:48.245 --> 00:02:14.955 If you were to take them before they were sown, show them the field as it is now, and say that's what you're going to be in a few months, those little beans would say, well, you're crazy. We're small. We're round and smooth, and those things are huge, and they're textured, and they're complex, and they have dimension to them and and branches and leaves. Those beans would think it's impossible to become like those plants we see out there. But it's not impossible. 00:02:15.275 --> 00:02:51.425 It is a miracle, and it's a miracle of the resurrection that God has built into nature. He's hardwired it into nature. He reminds us each season of Christ's resurrection and teaches us about our own coming resurrection as these simple seeds are sown into the ground and die and then raised in a more complex and more beautiful form of life. That's what it's gonna be like for us. Resurrection, the resurrection body is as much more splendid than this body as the plant is from the seed. 00:02:52.690 --> 00:03:33.710 Now what else do we hear here? Well, he says in 38, but God gives it talking about the seed that was sown. God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seen seed its own body. Us in just a second, but I wanna take just a slight detour here because some of the things we see in scripture is when an author is proving their point, they say other things that are true in the pursuit of proving that point. Some of those things that they say that are true are really good and encouraging and wonderful just to take on their own for a second, just to look at that that he said and allow that to soak in. 00:03:33.710 --> 00:04:01.900 So just a moment then. Think about what this means that God gives gives a body to the seeds as he has chosen for them. What we see here is is not a kind of distant deistic universe, like a set it and forget it universe where God winds up the clock and sits back and watches it happen. No. We see a universe where God is intimately involved with every single operation. 00:04:02.755 --> 00:04:17.555 God has personally chosen a unique body for each and every single plant of the field and plant of the forest, and that really shouldn't be that surprising for us. Right? Because he's named all the stars. It's right in line with his character. But don't let this pass by you. 00:04:18.280 --> 00:04:33.375 It's not just an interesting fact about God or an interesting fact about plants. This teaches us about his character. He knows every hair on your head. I've seen that in scripture. And he knows where and when to feed the sparrows. 00:04:33.375 --> 00:04:58.505 He knows when they fall to the ground. Or my very favorite, less talked about, but in Job thirty eight twenty five, it says that he brings rain onto a land where nobody lives. He brings rain onto a desert simply to satisfy the desert and make grouse grass sprout up even where no one's ever gonna see it, no one's ever gonna benefit from it. But he pays attention to it. He's in the details. 00:04:58.505 --> 00:05:34.825 So if you ever feel God doesn't notice you or is distant or is uninvolved or separated from your day to day life, just realize he is paying more attention to grass growing in a place where no human eye will ever see it. He's paying more attention to that grass than you are paying attention to your most cherished relationships. God is intimately involved with his creation Choosing the bodies of the seeds and plants. Let's continue on with what Paul is saying here. God gives it a body as he has chosen. 00:05:34.825 --> 00:06:17.340 39, for not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind of humans, another for animals, another for birds, another for fish. There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind and the glory of the earthly is of another. There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for star differs from star and glory. So as Paul's looking at here, what is some of the criteria God uses when choosing different bodily forms for different objects. He just said he chooses a form suited to each object, and now he mentions a bunch of different forms and gives some example. 00:06:17.340 --> 00:06:45.160 Now you'll notice Paul is moving from seeds to animals to stars here. He's not really concerned with scientific categories. Rather, he's making a point about the physical state in which things exist and why they are the way they are. Why has God made so many different physical forms to fill this universe with? Have ever thought about why things are the way they are? 00:06:45.160 --> 00:07:09.190 Why fish have scales and gills rather than wings and feathers? Why animals, or mammals as we would known them, have fur and claws for digging and wet noses for smelling? Why do humans walk on two legs rather than four, and were covered with skin rather than hair? Why do birds have beaks and wings rather than snouts and paws? Just think about that. 00:07:09.190 --> 00:07:34.110 God made those decisions. Then consider the difference between the bodies of heaven and earthly objects. The heaven, the bodies in heaven are bright and sterile and mysterious, and earthly bodies are tangible and dull and and gritty. But we see in verse 40 that both are glorious, just with different glories. Right? 00:07:34.110 --> 00:08:12.220 It's not that there's an ideal of one and the other is lacking. It's not that the heavenly is better than the earthly. Rather, both are perfectly suited to the environment in which they exist so that both heavenly and earthly bodies are glorious in their own way. This is why God chooses different bodily forms from the plants all the way to the stars so that each body might be suited to the place where God has put it, having its own glory as it abides there. God chooses a physical form suited to the context. 00:08:12.780 --> 00:08:45.070 He chooses a body fit to the environment. He creates a body appropriate to that body's mode of being. Birds are quick, light, delicate, nimble, beautiful, reflecting a type of glory appropriate for the wind and the sky in which they live. And animals are warm and they're snuffly and furry, rooted to the earth and they're powerful and heavy because that mode of bodily existence is exactly suited to the earth on which they live. It has its own glory. 00:08:45.855 --> 00:09:14.000 The sun, blazing, hot, clean, bright, has its own glory. The moon, silver, cold, subdued, has its own glory. Stars, distant, mysterious, and remote, have their own glory, and they differ from star to star. In all these things, God has chosen a unique physical form perfectly suited to the environment in which the body exists. And he does it for each body to have its own unique glory. 00:09:15.125 --> 00:09:32.700 Now that's just the way God does things. He doesn't change that pattern when it comes to our future body and the resurrection. Right? That's why we're talking about the forms in which things take because Paul's leading us right into what our body is going to be like. He says it in '42. 00:09:32.780 --> 00:09:49.775 So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown perishable what is sown is perishable. What is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor. It is raised in glory. 00:09:50.095 --> 00:10:01.680 It is sown in weakness. It is raised in power. It is sown a natural body. It is raised a spiritual body. If there's a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 00:10:02.800 --> 00:10:20.175 These bodies that we have right now, or sitting here in, or me standing here in, these are fitted to their present existence. The problem is that our existence right now is a cursed one. Right? It's one of death. Paul calls the body we live in now natural. 00:10:20.175 --> 00:10:40.515 He uses the word natural to refer to the body of sin and death we have now. He contrasts it with the spiritual body which we will one day have. Here comes an important point. Keep in mind, he's not talking about the substance of our bodies. He's not talking about the stuff that our bodies are made of. 00:10:40.595 --> 00:11:00.740 It's not that our bodies are made of flesh and bones now, and later on they'll be made of, you know, ether and light and gas. That's not what he's saying. The body we have now is made of flesh. The body we have later will also be a type of flesh, and it's not made of spirit. Rather, it is a body which is spiritual. 00:11:00.820 --> 00:11:19.745 There's a difference there. He's comparing the way our bodies exist now with the way they will exist when they are raised. You see, our mode of existence, the way we function now is suited to a fallen universe, isn't it? We're weak. We get sick. 00:11:19.825 --> 00:11:31.930 Our hair falls out. We feel pain. It's suited to this natural universe because that's the sort we live in. It's cursed. But that has nothing to do with with the flesh and bone. 00:11:32.090 --> 00:12:00.210 Flesh, bone, muscle, these things aren't a problem. Remember, God made Adam and Eve, the first humans who were perfect, made them out of flesh and bones. There's nothing wrong with the build building materials. Rather, it's the type of body that we have that is an issue. Right now, we have a natural type of body, then we will have a spiritual type of body that is fit for that world that is perfectly spiritual in existence. 00:12:01.730 --> 00:12:30.610 Now we have a surprising amount of information, detailed information of what that body is actually going to be like in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and in Acts. Because Paul makes the point here that our resurrection body is going to be just like Jesus' resurrection body. That's what he says in the next few verses here. 45 through 49. Thus it is written, the first man Adam became a living being. 00:12:30.770 --> 00:12:48.310 The last Adam became a life giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the natural and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust. The second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of dust. 00:12:48.790 --> 00:13:08.965 As is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, so we shall bear the image of the man of heaven. Here again, you see Jesus compared with Adam. We talked about that in my last sermon. We've got Adam given life in Genesis two seven. 00:13:08.965 --> 00:13:33.775 We have Jesus resurrected who gives life. All the better when he's resurrected. Adam's body was made from the dust of the earth, and Christ's resurrection body is of heaven. Just as we are now currently inhabiting a body like Adam's, so too we will have a body like the man from heaven, like Jesus Christ. And what was it like? 00:13:34.575 --> 00:13:48.080 Well, after Jesus was resurrected, he walked. He walked on the ground, but he could also transport. He appeared before the disciples. He could also fly. He ascended to heaven on a cloud. 00:13:48.080 --> 00:14:02.135 Same body doing all these things. He could be seen. He could be touched, but he could also hide his identity from Mary. And on the road to Emmaus, those disciples didn't recognize him either. So he could do something there. 00:14:02.855 --> 00:14:19.210 Undoubtedly, he had a physical body which he identified as himself and not simply something conjured up to represent himself. It wasn't some projection of himself. He says, no. This is actually really me. In Luke twenty four thirty nine, the disciples are concerned. 00:14:19.210 --> 00:14:33.685 Maybe that's not really Jesus. Maybe that's just a spirit. This is how Jesus responds to that. He says, see my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. 00:14:34.005 --> 00:14:55.575 Have you anything to eat? And they gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it before them. You could feel Jesus and he could eat. Clearly, he is not a spirit here. Rather, in line with the teaching we're getting from Paul in our passage, he had a body but it was a spiritual body. 00:14:55.575 --> 00:15:45.920 One suited to a spiritual existence no longer subject to death and sin and corruption and the weakness that emplaces on our natural bodies. Jesus' body after the resurrection is the exact same sort of spiritual body that we are destined to get and to live in, the new heaven and the new earth. So as we go through here, we really are getting a lot of info, a surprising amount of info of what that body is going to look like that will exist in one day. It's gonna be perfectly suited, perfectly fit for its perfect existence. Just like a fish's body is suited to water, a bird's body is suited to air, a mammal's body is suited to earth, and the body of a star's is suited to space, so we will be suited to our perfect existence. 00:15:46.405 --> 00:16:10.420 And 49 tells us that it's going to be like Jesus' resurrection body was. Let's see where else the spirit of God has led Paul to write here. Verse 50. I tell you this, brothers, flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. This makes sense with what we've heard so far. 00:16:10.900 --> 00:16:26.105 The with the body needing to fit the environment in which it's placed. Right? Our present flesh and bone, our present parable existence cannot inherit the kingdom of God. We we can't run. We can't work there. 00:16:26.105 --> 00:16:47.635 The body of death cannot function in the kingdom of life. Right? The the hardware needs to be able to run the software. If I go back to the Windows 95 computer we had growing up, try to put an Apple update onto it, that's just not going to work. So the hardware we're running right now is going to need an update, an upgrade. 00:16:47.635 --> 00:17:08.790 And that's not a problem because God has that covered, and here's an update that's actually going to work. Let me read in 51. Behold, I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. 00:17:10.115 --> 00:17:32.730 For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall all be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable. This mortal body must put on immortality. So that right there, that's exactly when and where the change happens. We are all changed by Jesus himself. 00:17:32.970 --> 00:17:52.240 He does it upon his glorious return to earth. Then we are enabled, we're changed and able to spend eternity with him. Now this is not the destruction of the earthly body, but an infinite addition to it. Listen to this. Notice the wording. 00:17:52.480 --> 00:18:13.765 The perishable must put on the imperishable. The mortal must put on immortality. We are changed, but we're changed by addition to rather than subtraction from. That's very important. This will be a renewed you, not a different you. 00:18:14.085 --> 00:18:44.745 And here's something similar in second Corinthians chapter five when Paul is writing another letter to the Corinthians. This time he talks about the body with reference to tent and clothing. But he's talking about the body we have in the future. Listen to this. He says, for while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened not to be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed so that what is mortal might be swallowed up in life. 00:18:45.920 --> 00:19:08.535 See, again, we see this change not by subtraction, but by addition. We don't become less us or less human, unclothed, as Paul puts it here. Rather, we become more us, more human so that death is swallowed up in life. That's exactly what we're seeing in our passage. We're not unmade. 00:19:08.695 --> 00:19:17.860 We're not deleted. We're not wiped out of our personhood. Rather, we are changed. We put on. You are not less you in heaven. 00:19:17.940 --> 00:19:32.385 You will be more you in heaven. And as a child, I know that was one of the big problems for heaven with me. Was thinking, well, am I going to be able to recognize my mom and dad? Will they still be them? Will everything be different and foreign and scary? 00:19:32.385 --> 00:20:04.145 No. You will certainly recognize those you knew in life because they will be even more themselves putting on life, not being wiped out and erased. So what we're seeing here then is that we have Christ's return, and then we have that last trumpet, and then bam. The dead are raised first, given new bodies, and all those who are left are caught up, and they're given new bodies. You see it written about also in first Thessalonians four sixteen. 00:20:04.305 --> 00:20:30.115 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Just take a moment to picture this. This is not fantasy. It's not Marvel. 00:20:30.115 --> 00:20:51.530 It's not even Narnia. This is actually your future. If you belong to Christ, then there's nothing that you can do and nothing that can be done to you that's going to cause you to avoid actually really being there for this day. So it's going to be a day starting off just like any other. You'll be in one of two groups. 00:20:51.770 --> 00:21:22.960 Group a, you'll be buried somewhere underground. Or if you're in group b, you'll be alive somewhere doing something. And on that day, there's going to be a loud voice, the cry of a loud voice that's going to be heard all through the earth, a shout. The last time that voice shouted on earth was from the cross when it said, it is finished, because this is going to be Jesus' own voice as he returns to earth. And then there's going to be a trumpet blast. 00:21:23.595 --> 00:22:00.315 And if you're in group a, in the time that it takes to blink, you'll be shot out of the grave, changed into a glorious body, and meeting Christ in the air. If you're in group b, you're gonna see this happen for a split second, and then you too will be changed and be with Christ in the air. And there, and the book of Thessalonians is very clear about this, you'll be reunited with all those whom you love who has been lost in Christ. And you will be with them together with the Lord, actually up in the clouds flying. Again, it's not fantasies. 00:22:00.315 --> 00:22:35.815 When you walk outside today, look in the clouds and say to yourself, I'll be floating around up there someday for a while when I meet Christ and see the others who I've lost in Christ. That's amazing. These these bodies are capable of quite a bit. When Christ died and resurrected on the cross, that has led us on this trajectory towards this moment which we are all headed towards when the perishable puts on the imperishable and the mortal puts on immortality. Then shall come to pass the saying that is written, death is swallowed up in victory. 00:22:36.290 --> 00:23:06.460 Oh death, where is your victory? Oh death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. When Christ returns, all those who belong to him put on the imperishable, then we see the decisive fulfillment of this prophecy that Paul quotes here about Christ's victory over death. 00:23:06.460 --> 00:23:32.345 That victory being for his people. Paul is quoting from Isaiah twenty five six through eight. I'll read it here. On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will make for all people a feast of rich food, a feast of well aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 00:23:32.505 --> 00:24:07.040 He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth. The Lord has spoken. The victory over sin that Jesus purchased on the Mount Of Golgotha when he gave his life, this will be completed at the second coming when all those who belong to him are given a body like his. And that moment left. We can't die anymore. 00:24:07.040 --> 00:24:26.385 Death has lost its sting. It's lost its victory such that Paul quotes from Hosea thirteen fourteen in mocking death there. But it's better than you think. It's better than you think. Paul takes this opportunity to kind of theologically parse out what's going on here, and it's spectacular. 00:24:26.865 --> 00:24:51.375 Let me read it for you. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. So this might be the best part, the best news in this entire message. When we are changed into those spiritual bodies I've been talking about, we are delivered from more than just death. 00:24:51.535 --> 00:25:05.020 Remember, death is secondary. Death is a byproduct. Death comes because of something worse and deeper, which we know is sin. Right? Romans five twelve. 00:25:05.020 --> 00:25:50.985 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man and death came through sin, so death spread to all men because all sinned. Death is only here because sin is here. And that sting we feel when we experience death, the heart sinking, then the sick feeling, and the sorrow when our spirit knows that something is wrong, that sting of death, that is a manifestation of sin in the world. If you get rid of death alone, you haven't solved the problem because people could just sin all over again and reintroduce death into the equation. But what do we see here? 00:25:51.900 --> 00:26:03.580 We're delivered from both death and sin. See that in these new bodies. Now if you look in the verse here, you're gonna see another element. The sting of death is sin. We talked about that. 00:26:03.580 --> 00:26:18.855 And the power of sin is the law. That seems a little out of left field there. How does the how does the law play into all this? Well, here's the way it works. You'll see it as you read through scripture, especially in the New Testament. 00:26:19.095 --> 00:26:49.445 In the Bible, sin, death, and law are very closely connected together. Because sin has no footing, sin has no power apart from the law. How is that? Well, to put it very simply, sin is breaking the law, but if there's no law to break, there's no sin. That may sound overly simplistic, but if you read through Romans, you're gonna see that's the logic that Paul continually goes back to. 00:26:49.445 --> 00:27:17.555 Romans three twenty, it's through the law comes a knowledge of sin. Romans four fifteen, for the law brings wrath, but where there is no law, there is no transgression. Romans five thirteen, sin is not counted where there is no law. The big idea here is that you can't break the law if you're not subject to the law. That's why the power of sin lies in the law. 00:27:17.555 --> 00:27:35.795 If the law disappears, then sin disappears. There's not even any potential to do sin. And if sin disappears, so too death disappears. See how these are woven together. We have this final deliverance from sin and death and the law in Christ. 00:27:36.035 --> 00:27:54.340 Thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus has fulfilled that law. We're unified to him, so we are free from that law. That cannot be broken anymore, and so there can be no sin. And if there can be no sin, then there can be no death. 00:27:54.820 --> 00:28:33.635 This victory we see guaranteed at the crucifixion and resurrection is finished and complete at Jesus' second coming when we are resurrected and made new in him, never subject to sin or death ever again. So then as we go back and consider our first question, how are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come? Well, how? We're raised by Jesus Christ himself when he returns blasting his trumpet, changing our bodies to be like his from imperishable or from perishable to imperishable. 00:28:33.635 --> 00:28:49.360 From mortal to immortal. The bodies that we'll be in, what are they like? They're spiritual. They're perfectly suited to this new pattern of life, this kingdom of heaven we'll live in. They are perfectly suited to function in that perfect environment. 00:28:50.320 --> 00:29:27.195 They are free from sin and death and the law, having all that fulfilled in Christ. It's perfect. Now knowing this and having finished Paul's entire chapter on resurrection, what do we do? Well, there's no better application than the one that Paul himself gives in verse 58. He says, therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and movable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your work is not in vain. 00:29:27.595 --> 00:30:26.115 You'd be thinking eternally, knowing that we have an incorruptible inheritance kept in heaven for us, knowing we have these perfected bodies in the future waiting for us, that God is preparing for us, God calls us to live now all the more vigorously for him. To be steadfast, to keep at it, to be immovable, to let nothing hinder our determination, our passion will. Don't get caught up and beaten down and held back by sin and every weight that clings so closely, but run with endurance the race set before you. King's tree, I want you and myself to be delighted, to allow yourself to be delighted by the thought of this reality, and then allow that to energize you in abounding and doing his work. We need to live with eternity in view. 00:30:26.115 --> 00:30:45.450 We need to think about these things more often. Our mind needs to visit these thoughts more often, and we should encourage one another with them. That's from first Thessalonians four. Think about the the coming of the Lord. This world that we live in now is coming to an end along with everything with it. 00:30:45.695 --> 00:31:05.900 But everything we do for the Lord is not in vain. It lasts forever. What are some examples of that? 00:31:06.460 --> 00:31:28.230 Helping a neighbor, encouraging someone and building them up, Praying with someone. Lovingly rebuking someone, calling out their sin. Leading your family in a bible study. Submitting your own desires for someone else's desires and not insisting on your own way. Counting someone else as more significant than yourself. 00:31:28.470 --> 00:31:43.315 Forgiving someone who's wrong to you. How to abound in the work of the Lord? Anything the bible says to do, do it. That's abounding in the work of the Lord. That's what matters the day Christ returns and into eternity. 00:31:43.315 --> 00:32:25.970 So in closing, I would challenge you, I've been challenging myself this week as well, to wake up each day thinking about eternity, think about the resurrection of Christ, think about our own resurrection, the meeting in the air, and then ask yourself this question. What matters today that will also matter on that day when Christ returns? What matters today that will also matter that day when Christ returns? You'll find the answer to that is very often other people, relationships, and these sorts of things. And then in that frame of mind, go about and abound in whatever work the Lord has for you that day. 00:32:26.050 --> 00:33:03.980 Because everything done for him, all done in his name is not in vain, but has great promise for this life and for the life to come. Let me pray that the Lord might make this true for us. Father, we thank you for this eternity that is awaiting us. We thank you for this existence we'll have not dissimilar from this life, and yet so dissimilar from this life, but one that we'll be perfectly at home and perfectly content with and glad for. I pray that we'd be encouraged by those thoughts. 00:33:04.515 --> 00:33:44.705 And I pray that that encouragement, that consideration of eternity would spur us on to do more here, now, in this place where the world is fading away, and some souls are are not headed for heaven. Lord, let us abound in your work and do it and be encouraged. Help that to be the response to this understanding of our renewed and resurrected body we will have with you someday. And And there's no formula where we can just convince ourself of that and then make it happen.
