निःस्पृहः गुम्फनदासः

दैवभक्त्या, निःस्पृहतया, परोपकारशीलतया च सर्वत्र ख्यातः आसीत् भगवद्भक्तः गुम्फनदासः । तं सत्कर्तुम् इच्छन् राजा मानसिंहः स्वयं तदीयं गृहं गतवान् । तत्र दर्पणरूपेण जलम्, आसनरूपेण तृणानि दृष्ट्वा राजा रजतासनं सुवर्णदर्पणं कारयित्वा दास्यामि इति वदति । तत् गुम्फनदासेन निराक्रियते । दैनन्दिनव्ययाय धनं, ग्रामाधिकारिपदं वा स्वीक्रियताम् इति राजनि उक्ते धनं काष्ठकीर्णकीटः इव बाधते, अपि च अहं भगवद्भक्तपदेन एव तृप्तः अस्मि इति वदति । अन्यत् किमपि न अवश्यकम् इति वदति । तस्य निःस्पृहतां दृष्ट्वा तं सादरं प्रणम्य ततः राजा निर्गच्छति ।

Gumphana Das was widely known for his devotion to God, selflessness, and helpful nature. Wanting to honor him, King Manasinha personally visited his home. There, he saw water used as a mirror and grass used as seating. The king offered to make a silver throne and a golden mirror for him, but Gumphana Das refused. When the king offered money for daily expenses or a village administrator position, Gumphana Das replied that money was like a troublesome insect and that he was content with being a devotee of God. He did not need anything else. Seeing his selflessness, the king respectfully bowed to him and left.
