KZYX Public Affairs

In 1972, a young ornithologist discovered a breeding colony of Black Guillemots in an unlikely spot: on a remote barrier island off the Alaska North Slope, far from any rocky headlands where they normally nest. George Divoky began studying the birds and never stopped, returning every summer for 38 years. He thus became an eyewitness to the effects of climate change, noticing them even before the issue gained national attention. Dr. Divoky tells the story on this week's The Ecology Hour on KZYX, with hosts Tim Bray and Bob Spies. Broadcast on October 13, 2020.
