अयि, मयेदं किं कृतम् !

मृगयाव्यसनः कश्चन युवा भुषुण्डिम् आदाय अश्वम् आरुह्य मृगयार्थं वनम् अगच्छत् । तत्र च हंसयूथं रममाणं दृष्ट्वा तेन स्वभुषुण्डितः गोलिका मुक्ता । गोलिकया एकः हंसः विद्धः सन् चीत्कारं कृतवान् । सः युवा अश्वात् अवतीर्य तत्पार्श्वे गतः । तीव्रव्यथया चीत्कुर्वन्तं हंसं च दृष्टवान् । किञ्चित्कालनन्तरं सः हंसः प्राणैः विमुक्तः‌ जातः । मृतं स्वप्रियतमं विज्ञाय तत्प्रियतमा हंसी करुणं विलपति स्म । सर्वं दृश्यं दृष्टवतः तस्य यूनः हृदयम् आर्द्रं जातम् - 'मया न सुष्ठु कृतम् । अद्यारभ्य अहं कदापि मृगयां निरर्थिकां हिंसां वा न आचरिष्यामि' इति अवदत् । सः एव अग्रे अमेरिकायाम् अब्राहमलिङ्कननामकः प्रसिद्धः प्रमुखः जातः ।
