The Honest Path

Podcast Guide:
Big Idea: Joy is not something you stumble into accidentally—it is something you build intentionally.

Four Quarters:
1. Who killed Joy: Where Has All The Joy Gone?
2. Disciplines That Create the Joy You Have
3. Disciplines that Protect Joy
4. Finding Sustainable Joy: The Eternal Root

Q1: Who killed Joy: A Hopeless Culture
  • Regret (past), anxiety (future), and comparison (everywhere) pull men out of the present—the only place joy can actually be experienced.
  • Rising anxiety and depression despite increased comfort
  • Comparison has gone global and constant
  • We are over-stimulated but under-satisfied
  • Loss of meaning and purpose
  • Isolation is increasing
Action Items:
  • Take a 24-hour break from social media or news consumption.
  • Spend one full day without comparing your life to anyone online.
  • Write down three good things about your current season of life.

Q2: Disciplines That Create The Joy I Have: Being present for the pleasures of life
  • All of the joys of life are available to you, right now
  • Attention is the gateway to joy
  • Rest is not optional—it is foundational
  • Boundaries protect your internal world
  • Presence must be practiced
  • Mental diet shapes emotional health
  • Rhythms beat intentions
Action Items:
  • Eat one meal this week slowly and without screens.
  • Spend at least 30 minutes outside in nature.
  • Revisit a simple joy you loved as a kid.
  • Schedule intentional time with someone you genuinely enjoy.

Q3: Disciplines That Protect Joy: Gratitude, celebrating others
Gratitude is the gateway to joy. You can do everything else in this episode, and if you can’t find it within yourself to be grateful, they will not help you.
If comparison poisons joy, celebrating the successes of others is the antidote
  • The gratitude of waking up to another day of life.
  • Gratitude for health, food, shelter
  • Gratitude for those in your life, even when they are a challenge
  • Progress fuels joy more than perfection
Action Items:
  • Write down three things you are grateful for every morning.
  • Send a text to someone encouraging or celebrating their success.
  • Pray a gratitude prayer before bed each night this week.
  • Stop complaining about one recurring frustration for seven days.

Q4: Finding Sustainable Joy: The Eternal Root
The joy that surpasses all understanding, all circumstances
Even in the most extreme scenarios, where all life’s simple pleasures are unavailable to you, you’re entirely alone, there is nothing to be grateful for besides your life (e.g. prison), you still have the fount of living water inside you
  • You are always in the presence of someone who loves you
  • Your father has promised to provide what you need
  • God will redeem the past - FORGIVEN. NO SHAME
  • God will fulfill all of his promises in the future - HOPE is essential
  • To be a Christian is to have faith in the fairy tale ending of all creation!
  • The story ends in restoration, not despair

Action Items:
  • Spend 10 minutes each day in prayer or quiet with God.
  • Read one Psalm each morning this week.
  • Memorize a Scripture about hope or joy.
