We're going to look at Matthew 4, 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:32.400 verses 1 through 11 this morning of the temptation of Jesus. And I think this is a very interesting 00:02:32.400 --> 00:02:36.280 passage of Scripture, a very common passage of Scripture. If you've grown up in church, 00:02:36.360 --> 00:02:39.460 you've been around church for a while, this is probably something that you've heard. But something 00:02:39.460 --> 00:02:42.740 that I thought about this week for the very first time, I've never thought about this, and I think 00:02:42.740 --> 00:02:48.060 it's what makes this passage unique, that in most of the Gospels, right, of what we see, it is Jesus' 00:02:48.540 --> 00:02:57.080 encounter. It's an encounter with Jesus, and disciples are with Him. Outsiders are with them. And so when 00:02:57.080 --> 00:03:02.680 the Gospels were written, they were writing based off of the firsthand knowledge of what they had seen 00:03:02.680 --> 00:03:09.380 Jesus do or heard Jesus say. But here in Matthew 4, verses 1 through 11, what we find 00:03:09.380 --> 00:03:16.060 of the temptation of Christ is it's Jesus and the devil. So at some point in time, Jesus sat down 00:03:16.060 --> 00:03:21.800 and said, guys, let me tell you what happened. Because I'm going to tell you what took place. 00:03:23.740 --> 00:03:32.140 And with vivid and clear and precise language, He recorded, or He spoke this, I'm sorry, He spoke 00:03:32.140 --> 00:03:39.860 this. And then a disciple like Matthew, through the power of the Holy Spirit, as He's inspired to write, 00:03:39.980 --> 00:03:46.260 shares with us these words. So I just think it's a remarkable, remarkable account of what we get, 00:03:46.360 --> 00:03:51.180 because Jesus says, of all of the things that Jesus leaves out in His interaction with the disciples, 00:03:51.380 --> 00:03:58.760 He looks and says, let me tell you about this. Let me tell you about this. And so this is what we get. 00:03:58.760 --> 00:04:01.840 Let me read Matthew 4. I'm just going to read the first two verses as we get started. 00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:10.500 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 00:04:12.580 --> 00:04:18.680 And after fasting 40 days and 40 nights, He was hungry. All right, let's pause there for a minute. 00:04:19.340 --> 00:04:26.180 There are certain verses and passages in Scripture that we can just skip over them and not begin to 00:04:26.180 --> 00:04:33.700 understand the impactful complexity that they offer. And I think Matthew 4 verses 1 through 2 are a couple 00:04:33.700 --> 00:04:41.320 of those, right? It says that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. 00:04:41.400 --> 00:04:52.120 That's a lot. That's a lot. Jesus led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 00:04:52.120 --> 00:05:01.020 And all of this happens and takes place after His 40 days and 40 nights of fasting. 00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:06.460 But also, right remember what we talked about last week, the baptism of Jesus. 00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:16.840 You see, you and I, if we're not careful, we can think that because we're being obedient to God, 00:05:17.780 --> 00:05:19.880 that we will then be free from temptation. 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:24.920 You know, I'm doing all things. in the wilderness with his body being abused and walked through and all of these things that will happen and take place. 00:17:03.280 --> 00:17:13.740 And so what Satan does is Satan chooses this moment in time and in the sovereignty of God to come and to say, now's the time to do this. 00:17:15.700 --> 00:17:16.700 And Satan will do that. 00:17:16.700 --> 00:17:18.680 And Satan will do that
