शान्तिसङ्केतः कपोतः

कदाचित् द्वयोः देशयोः मध्ये युद्धः प्रचलति । शिरस्त्राणे सन्ति कपोतस्य सद्योजाताः शिशवः इति कारणतः राजा शिरस्त्राणम् अधृत्वा रणाङ्गणं प्रति गतवान् । एतत् दृष्ट्वा शत्रुराजः कारणं पृच्छति । प्रवृत्तं सर्वं विज्ञाय शत्रुराजः प्रतिवेशिराजस्य शान्तिप्रियताम् अभिनन्दन् अवदत् यत् 'युद्धकारणतः असङ्ख्यानां सैनिकानां मरणे प्रयासः कथम् औचित्यम् आवहेत्? विवेकिभिः अविचिन्त्य न व्यवहरणीयम् । आवां सम्भूय शान्तिं रक्षावः' इति । तस्मात् दिनात् कपोतः शान्तिसङ्केतत्वेन परिगण्यमानः अस्ति ।

Once, a war was going on between two countries. Because there were newly hatched pigeon chicks in his helmet, the king went to the battlefield without wearing it. Seeing this, the enemy king asked for the reason. After learning everything, the enemy king admired the peaceful nature of his rival and said, ‘How can efforts resulting in the death of countless soldiers be justified by war? Wise men should not act without thought. Let us together maintain peace’. Since then, the pigeon has been considered a symbol of peace.
