If Athens was the university, Corinth was the marketplace. Wealthy, diverse, famously immoral. The Greeks had coined a verb from the city's name meaning to live like a Corinthian. Paul arrived alone, carrying what he later described as weakness and fear and trembling. Athens had produced a brilliant sermon and a handful of converts, and the gap between faithfulness and fruitfulness was wearing on him. God met him there through two people and a shared trade. Aquila and Priscilla were Jewish refugees, recently expelled from Rome under Claudius's edict. They'd lost everything and started over as leather workers. When Paul discovered they shared his craft, he moved in and went to work. A displaced couple and a discouraged apostle, stitching leather side by side. Paul worked during the week and preached in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Ministry doesn't always look like a pulpit. Sometimes it looks like a workbench.
