This is an introductory course on the time-honored technique of using bacteria to treat industrial, paper and municipal wastewaters. We will cover the conditions required to optimize the removal of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) as well as some limitations of the process. We will also focus on the concepts such as Food/Mass Ratio, Sludge Age, Sludge Volume Index, Dissolved Oxygen Uptake Rate (DOUR), and others. We also cover the microbiology of Activated Sludge systems as well as methods to adjust parameters such as Recycle Rate and Wasting Rate to meet changing conditions. Finally, we cover the prevention, control and elimination of Filamentous Bacteria and use of Specialized Bacterial Cultures to round out your knowledge of this fascinating technology.
