Once you know what you don't know, the next problem is figuring out how to actually learn it. And for most people, the default answer is brute force: read everything, repeat everything, drill until it sticks. This approach isn't just inefficient. It actively makes learning worse by stripping context, killing motivation, and creating the exact robotic, over-rehearsed performance that signals someone who knows facts but can't actually apply them.
Brian draws a direct line between the parts of school most people hated and the brute-force learning pattern. When content doesn't connect to how you already understand the world, it doesn't take root. The movement from conscious incompetence to conscious competence requires a different posture: understanding the major moving pieces, creating space for practice, and finding how skills fit together rather than stacking isolated facts.
The how of learning is personal and specific, and no single episode can prescribe it universally. What Brian can say plainly is that investing in understanding your own learning process is not optional if you're serious about development. How you learn is part of the work.
Conscious competence doesn't come from hammering harder. It comes from learning how to learn, and that investment pays everywhere.
