असहायाः न पीडनीयाः

कदाचित् कश्चन कृषिकः भीत्या धावतः शशशिशून् दण्डं गृहीत्वा अनुसृतवान् । तेषां धावनस्य दर्शनेन आनन्दं प्राप्नोति स्म । एतत् दृष्ट्वा कश्चन संन्यासी 'अन्यस्य असहायकतां दृष्ट्वा आनन्दप्राप्तिः न उचिता । ये असहायकताम् अनुभवेयुः तेषां मानसिकक्लेशम् अवगन्तुं प्रयासः करणीयः' इत्यादिभिः वचनैः तं कृषिकं बोधितवान् । स्वस्य दोषं ज्ञात्वा सः कृषिकः संन्यासिनं‌ क्षमाम् अयाचत ।

Once, a farmer chased some frightened young hares with a stick, and he felt joy watching them run. Seeing this, a monk advised him: “It is not right to feel pleasure at another’s helplessness. One should try to understand the mental suffering of those who experience helplessness.” Realizing his fault, the farmer asked the monk for forgiveness.
