point in his life. 00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:53.080 When we find him in Judges chapter 6, if you recall, it says that he is tucked away in a hole, 00:04:53.200 --> 00:05:00.540 in a cave, in a mountain, and you find him there hiding food because he's so scared of the oppressors 00:05:00.540 --> 00:05:14.260 And so when we find Gideon, we find him at the lowest spot that he's ever found himself. 00:05:14.460 --> 00:05:18.900 He is literally sitting there trying to hide his food away, right? 00:05:18.960 --> 00:05:21.900 Like think of a squirrel trying to pack acorns away. 00:05:22.060 --> be obedient to him. 00:06:06.400 --> 00:06:13.600 And so we see Gideon commit acts of treason against the people and the religion of the day. 00:06:14.280 --> 00:06:19.140 God calls him to go down and fall deeper in love with you. 00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:41.620 And so we see when Gideon lays out the fleeces, you know, that's Gideon saying, 00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:45.060 God, help me understand more and more about who you are. 00:06:45.060 --> 00:06:51.000 When Gideon has the dreams interpreted for him and he overhears this, what he's dying to know, 00:06:51.080 --> 00:06:54.520 what he's longing to know is more and more, God, who are you? 00:06:55.160 --> 00:07:01.720 And through all of these journeys in the midst of Gideon's desperation, when logic tells him, 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:03.320 no, you shouldn't do this. 00:07:03.320 --> 00:07:08.980 Faith in who God is drives Gideon to radical points of obedience. 00:07:10.020 --> 00:07:15.260 When Gideon tore down the altar of Baal that was at his dad's house, 00:07:15.840 --> 00:07:20.100 the next day men of the town came to kill him. 00:07:21.020 --> 00:07:24.340 That's the level of obedience that this man has. 00:07:24.980 --> 00:07:30.300 And what we looked at last week was Gideon leading his men into battle. 00:07:30.360 --> 00:07:40.060 A weak Israelite army of 32,000 men that some believe would have been up against as many as 200,000 soldiers. 00:07:40.460 --> 00:07:46.620 But Gideon is willing to lead 32,000 men, even though they're outnumbered, into battle. 00:07:47.360 --> 00:07:51.600 But God says, no, no, Gideon, it's too many. 00:07:52.820 --> 00:08:00.520 And then through the sovereignty and process of God, God whittles that army of 32,000 down to 300. 00:08:01.680 --> 00:08:08.400 And Gideon obeys and leads them into a battle where they didn't even have to draw their swords. 00:08:08.540 --> 00:08:09.680 They didn't even have to fight. 00:08:10.040 --> 00:08:12.740 And that God was the victor. Gideon as we find him hiding away. 00:08:31.620 --> 00:08:36.040 So when you look at the story of Gideon, you see what God is able to do from the weakness. 00:08:36.380 --> 00:08:38.860 You see what God is able to do with the least of these. 00:08:38.860 --> 00:08:44.600 But the key is that it's not because Gideon is weak, it's because Gideon is weak and he's desperate. 00:08:45.140 --> 00:08:49.540 It's because Gideon longs for and wants to be obedient to God. 00:08:50.340 --> 00:08:53.140 But we're going to see a different side of Gideon this morning. 00:08:54.200 --> 00:09:02.640 The story of the last two weeks were the story of Gideon that movies are made about to inspire men and women to great faith. 00:09:02.840 --> 00:09:08.240 But what we find in Judges chapter 8, we're not going to see that same side of Gideon anymore. 00:09:08.680 --> 00:09:20.760 We're going to see a man who stops living in desperation and who starts to live in the experience and maybe even believe in his own victory. 00:09:21.080 --> 00:09:27.340 Do you remember the whole reason why God shrunk the army from 32,000 to 300 was what? 00:09:27.800 --> 00:09:36.440 So that everyone who knew that Gideon had led them into battle would know that the victory came from God and God alone. 00:09:37.080 --> 00:09:42.840 But now we're going to see a different heart of Gideon that we've seen before. 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:52.140 And in Judges chapter 8, Gideon's going to come into conflict as he continues to pursue the Midianites to fully defeat them. 00:09:52.660 --> 00:09:58.040 And Gideon is going to have conflict with some of the clans and the tribes that are part of the nation of Israel. 00:09:58.520 --> 00:10:05.080 And we're going to see in how Gideon interacts with them to challenge them. 00:11:14.380 --> 00:11:23.940 Gideon doesn't point out that God is the great victor, that it's only through God and God alone, that Gideon didn't do this, that God did this. But what we see is the crack that begins to happen in the character and the heart of Gideon. 00:11:51.720 --> 00:11:58.000 This is the first moment where we begin to see that Gideon begins to waver. kings, Zeba and Zalmanah, we see that he comes through these towns. 00:12:22.580 --> 00:12:28.640 And as he's in pursuit of these kings, because once he defeats these kings, he will have defeated the this, he's going through now the test of prosperity. 00:17:22.960 --> 00:17:30.560 You see, in the test of adversity, in the test of prosperity, are the journeys of life that you and I will find how do you view your weakness? 00:17:48.720 --> 00:18:02.060 How do you view when you find yourself, figuratively speaking, hiding away in the cave, storing away some food in that moment of vulnerable, in the moment of adversity as it faces you? 00:18:02.060 --> 00:18:12.160 And we shared this quote last week, that you can't know that he being God is all that you need until he is all that you have. 00:18:12.960 --> 00:18:19.220 That for so many of us, as we go through adversity, we've tried everything else. 00:18:20.100 --> 00:18:25.320 We've done in our own power and in our own will and in our own might and our own strength. 00:18:25.460 --> 00:18:32.720 And we have failure after failure after failure that we can do nothing else but now desperately cling to God. 00:18:34.200 in the prosperity in isolation. 00:20:46.740 --> 00:20:51.500 Now, Gideon, in his prosperity, is not one of forgiveness. 00:20:52.120 --> 00:20:56.780 Remember, all the nation had turned to idolatry Gideon does, doesn't match what he says. 00:24:47.280 --> 00:24:49.600 Gideon says, now I'm not going to be king. 00:24:50.840 --> 00:24:52.940 But I am kind of a big deal. 00:24:53.000 --> 00:24:53.820 So here's what we're going to do. 00:24:54.180 --> 00:24:56.020 Give me all the gold from the spoil. 00:24:56.740 --> 00:24:58.400 Give me everything that we've gotten. 00:24:58.720 --> 00:25:01.820 And I am going to make an ephod. 00:25:02.440 --> 00:25:03.680 A golden ephod. 00:25:04.260 --> 00:25:08.740 Now an ephod was an item that was worn by the high priest in the tabernacle. 00:25:08.740 --> 00:25:15.380 Which there was one, and it was where the people went to hear from God. 00:25:16.020 --> 00:25:17.700 And so look at what Gideon's doing. 00:25:18.500 --> 00:25:20.100 Gideon says, there's an ephod. 00:25:20.180 --> 00:25:24.800 And that determines where the people go to listen and to surrender to the Lord. 00:25:24.920 --> 00:25:29.020 So I'm not going to be king because I know that's not what I'm supposed to do. 00:25:29.120 --> 00:25:30.580 But here's what I am going to do. 00:25:30.680 --> 00:25:32.480 I'm going to make a copy of this. 00:25:32.600 --> in this we see another turn in the life of Gideon that's going to continue to build and build and build. 00:25:57.020 --> 00:26:04.660 And what he instills in his people is that they are no longer going to be the people of God who they were before. 00:26:05.080 --> 00:26:09.500 Because people of God are people of word and action. 00:26:10.460 --> 00:26:14.040 Gideon's words say, oh, no, I would level of we're meshing and we're working these together to see what comes from these? 00:28:17.720 --> 00:28:26.360 And what Gideon is building in the Israelites, what Gideon is building in his we live in a society of multiple cultures. 00:29:15.520 --> 00:29:20.480 Every day, you live and you function and you operate in many different cultures. 00:29:21.120 --> 00:29:25.500 You've got the culture of your individual life, which affects the culture of your family, 00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:27.820 which affects the culture in which you work, 00:29:28.240 --> 00:29:30.700 which affects the culture in which we all live, 00:29:30.980 --> 00:29:32.960 which affects the culture in which we worship, 00:29:33.220 --> 00:29:37.580 and you can continue to build on and farther and farther out. 00:29:37.800 --> 00:29:44.040 The culture of my home and how we do things may be different than the culture of your home and how you do things. 00:29:44.380 --> 00:29:52.000 And as men and women of faith, what we are working toward is establishing a culture that lives to glorify and honor God. 00:29:52.520 --> 00:29:55.580 And that's not what we see here in Gideon. 00:29:56.160 --> 00:30:01.540 So the question that we have to ask as we look at his life and we examine our own is, 00:30:01.680 --> 00:30:06.020 are we embracing a culture of sin or a culture of sanctification? 00:30:07.020 --> 00:30:12.540 In Gideon's desperation, Gideon was walking in a culture of sanctification. 00:30:12.540 --> 00:30:17.260 It was what he was building around him in his desperate moments for the Lord. 00:30:17.540 --> 00:30:26.180 But what we see here in Judges chapter 8 is him moving away from the culture of sanctification and moving more toward a culture of sin. 00:30:26.740 --> 00:30:35.000 We find out in Scripture, all right, that Gideon has 70 sons, all right? 00:30:36.060 --> 00:30:38.060 So, we'll figure this out. 00:30:38.680 --> 00:30:40.060 It means Gideon had many wives. 00:30:41.280 --> 00:30:45.500 When you read about, because I get this question a lot, there is polygamy in the Old Testament. 00:30:46.440 --> 00:30:48.140 It's common in the Old Testament. 00:30:49.060 --> 00:30:56.200 But it's important for us to know that while polygamy, having more than one wife, is common in this practice in the Old Testament, 00:30:56.520 --> 00:31:00.000 it is never, not one time is it condoned by God. 00:31:00.780 --> 00:31:02.020 It's not God's plan. 00:31:03.420 --> 00:31:06.440 Gideon has 70 sons by many different wives. 00:31:07.440 --> 00:31:08.840 But Gideon also has a concubine. 00:31:10.080 --> 00:31:13.000 And again, the culture of his day says, this is okay. 00:31:13.800 --> 00:31:19.260 God never, God never says, this is good by me, that this is my will for you. 00:31:19.920 --> 00:31:23.140 And we begin to see this life that Gideon has. 00:31:23.140 --> 00:31:30.660 We begin to see this culture of sin that is more and more invading his heart and his life. 00:31:31.180 --> 00:31:33.840 And so, Gideon has a son from the concubine. 00:31:35.140 --> 00:31:39.080 And this son, Gideon, gives the name Abimelech. 00:31:39.740 --> 00:31:44.580 And it's very important that we understand that Gideon gives him this name. 00:31:45.100 --> 00:31:49.700 Because the name Abimelech means, my father is king. 00:31:50.540 --> 00:31:52.140 My father is king. 00:31:52.820 --> 00:31:57.080 Oh, here's almighty Gideon, all noble Gideon. 00:31:57.760 --> 00:31:59.620 Nah, I'm not going to be king. 00:32:00.820 --> 00:32:04.220 But I'm going to name my son, my father is king. 00:32:05.140 --> 00:32:09.540 Gideon who says, no, no, no, no, no, God is your lord, God is your king. 00:32:09.960 --> 00:32:13.620 But with my actions, seek after me. 00:32:14.460 --> 00:32:22.360 And what Gideon is doing in these moments is he's continuing to build more and more of a culture of sin around him. 00:32:23.080 --> 00:32:24.380 And then Gideon dies. 00:32:25.460 --> 00:32:29.940 And what we are going to see is this culture of sin and how it plays out. 00:32:30.360 --> 00:32:38.120 So, I ask myself this question with looking at Gideon's life, with understanding scripture, what does the culture of sanctification look like? 00:32:40.000 --> 00:32:54.240 Parents, let's go ahead and acknowledge that in our lives, I say parents, but let me say for all of us, where we go, that there are parts of us, because we are not perfect, where we embrace cultures of sin. 00:32:54.920 --> 00:32:55.080 Right? 00:32:55.200 --> 00:32:58.100 There's not a one of us in here who's perfect. 00:32:58.480 --> 00:33:00.180 So, we all have that. 00:33:00.500 --> 00:33:10.520 But when we begin to live boldly for the Lord, when we begin to pursue after him, what we find that comes from that is a culture of sanctification. 00:33:10.820 --> 00:33:13.420 And what we see from that in scripture is this. 00:33:13.620 --> 00:33:16.660 A culture of sanctification first is marked by repentance. 00:33:17.740 --> 00:33:19.540 Will always be marked by repentance. 00:33:19.920 --> 00:33:27.840 Where men and women of God are confident enough in their faith in God and their standing in God to look at all the people around them and say, 00:33:28.220 --> 00:33:32.940 Not only do I understand that I'm not where I need to be, but I repent before God of it. 00:33:33.660 --> 00:33:37.060 And the level of boldness of faith that it takes in that. 00:33:37.640 --> 00:33:45.240 A culture of sanctification is one that shows complete dependence and trust on God on the mountaintop and in the valley. 00:33:45.240 --> 00:33:51.260 A culture of sanctification requires a deep-rooted sense of prayer in your life. 00:33:51.480 --> 00:33:56.100 One of the first things that we see Gideon walk away from is this communication with the Lord. 00:33:57.360 --> 00:34:06.960 And in a culture of sanctification, more so than anything else maybe, from a man or woman of God, is to be desperate to grow. 00:34:07.680 --> 00:34:08.960 To experience growth. 00:34:09.900 --> 00:34:13.500 I heard a sportscaster, and I may offend some people in here. 00:34:13.800 --> 00:34:19.640 I found that when you talk about this sports team, some people you offend and others cheer when you give them a hard time. 00:34:20.300 --> 00:34:24.380 But he was talking about the dysfunction of the Dallas Cowboys, all right? 00:34:24.700 --> 00:34:27.100 And so if you're a Dallas Cowboys fan, you don't like that. 00:34:27.140 --> 00:34:30.780 But he said they're the most dysfunctional sports program. 00:34:31.400 --> 00:34:35.360 The most dysfunctional sports team that we have going on right now. 00:34:35.700 --> 00:34:37.020 And he said this about 00:35:18.120 --> 00:35:35.620 And so what Gideon could have left behind was the culture that was created in that cave, was the culture that was created with a fleece, was the culture that was created when he shrunk the army of 32,000 down to 300, but instead he left behind a culture of sin. 00:35:36.220 --> 00:35:54.680 And so he dies, and in Judges 9, verse 6, it says, all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth Milo, and they went and they made Abimelech king by the oak of the pillar of Shechem. 00:35:55.480 --> 00:36:01.260 And we begin to see what the culture of sin has created. depravity that Israel goes through. 00:36:34.060 --> 00:36:51.780 And I believe when you and I take a step and take a moment, and we look at our culture, and we look at our climate, and look at where
