Dr Laura Finlayson-Short is a Research Fellow at Phoenix Australia's Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health.

In this episode, Matt talks to Dr Laura Finlayson-Short.  Matt participated in a trial program called 'SOLAR-m' during his time in Fire Rescue NSW that was lead by Laura and the team at the Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health.   The SOLAR-m FRNSW trial aims to find out if using a smartphone app designed specifically for first responders, can help firefighters improve their mood as well as wellbeing and feel more in control of their reactions to distressing situations.

Beyond exploring this program, in this podcast we talk about issues related to cultural competence of mental health treatment providers working with first responders, MRI scans of people with mental health conditions and so much more.  Some of the information and programs referred to in the podcast are listed below:

What is Heart 2 Heart Walk Podcast?

Podcast of the Heart 2 Heart Walk. A long distance walk to raise awareness around First Responder Mental Health and Wellbeing including Suicide, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Premature Mortality. The Heart 2 Heart Walk will take place from the 1 July 2023 from the geographic centre of Australia to the Nation's Capital, taking 3 months and over 2500km. The Podcast will cover everything from amazing stories of Police and Emergency Services workers right through to academic researchers looking at the issues related to mental health of Australia's First Responders.
