00:02:33.680 with the Easter story as we talk about it, where the culmination, and this is key, is going 00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:37.900 to be next Sunday when we talk about Resurrection Sunday, when we talk about the fact that the 00:02:37.900 --> 00:02:40.760 tomb is empty, which is an important part, right? 00:02:40.820 --> 00:02:42.220 Like, that must happen. 00:02:42.480 --> 00:02:47.080 If we celebrate that. 00:03:02.680 --> 00:03:07.640 But in the story, in the narrative of the Easter story, there's so many different twists 00:03:07.640 --> 00:03:13.860 and turns as we go through it, and we're able to see and draw from these pivotal events that 00:03:13.860 --> 00:03:17.340 happen and take place and that reveal to us more who Jesus is. 00:03:17.540 --> 00:03:23.040 They speak to our heart more of our depravity and our sin and who we are now in Christ. 00:03:23.040 --> 00:03:30.040 And last week, when we looked at Judas and Peter and how there was a failing in both of 00:03:30.040 --> 00:03:30.940 them, right? 00:03:31.060 --> 00:03:33.060 Peter denied Jesus. 00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:35.500 Judas sold out Jesus. 00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:43.180 And we've got both of these instances that happen, and they're both sin in different capacities, 00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:48.380 but what we see on the end of their stories, what we begin to know as Judas killed himself 00:03:48.380 --> 00:03:54.680 because of a lack of understanding of grace, and Peter, in all of his failings, went on 00:03:54.680 --> 00:03:58.740 to be a church planter who would go out and proclaim the gospel and share. 00:03:59.380 --> 00:04:04.360 The same man who was afraid for people to know that he was with Christ stood up before that 00:04:04.360 --> 00:04:08.020 same group of people and said, hey, you killed the Messiah. 00:04:08.620 --> 00:04:09.560 You did this. 00:04:10.380 --> 00:04:12.160 And it's because Peter understood grace. 00:04:12.940 --> 00:04:17.420 And so when we look at that and begin to understand, I had somebody ask me this week. 00:04:17.960 --> 00:04:25.060 They said, you know, as I try to understand Judas' path and Judas' life, do you think that 00:04:25.060 --> 00:04:30.420 Judas would have been given forgiveness by God in spite of all that he had done? 00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:33.300 And my answer was, absolutely. 00:04:34.340 --> 00:04:35.620 That's what grace is. 00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:37.940 That's what God's working and doing. 00:04:38.680 --> 00:04:40.620 You know, Judas sold out Jesus. 00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:46.580 And while that's horrific in that, God would still extend the same grace that he would extend 00:04:46.580 --> 00:04:52.580 to Paul, who had become Saul, who was a mass murderer, right, of Christians. 00:04:53.480 --> 00:04:54.560 But that's the hope. 00:04:55.200 --> 00:04:56.960 That's what we have with the experience. 00:04:57.700 --> 00:05:03.700 And today, what we're going to look at, we're going to dive into the trial of Jesus and the 00:05:03.700 --> 00:05:04.980 crucifixion of Jesus. 00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:11.000 And as we look through that, we're going to see a picture of greater clarity of what Jesus 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:14.120 is doing that's going to lead him to the cross. 00:05:14.200 --> 00:05:19.900 And then what Jesus is going to do, the tomb will be empty to give you and I hope and reason 00:05:19.900 --> 00:05:20.500 to celebrate. 00:05:21.140 --> 00:05:24.820 So let's start reading in Matthew 27, starting in verse 11. 00:05:26.580 --> 00:05:32.920 It says, now Jesus stood before the governor and the governor asked him, are you the king 00:05:32.920 --> 00:05:33.580 of the Jews? 00:05:34.620 --> 00:05:37.060 And Jesus said, you have said so. 00:05:37.960 --> 00:05:42.500 But when he was accused by the chief priest and elders, he gave no answer. 00:05:43.380 --> 00:05:49.700 And then Pilate said to him, do you not hear many things they testify against you? 00:05:49.700 --> 00:05:51.940 How many things they testify against you? 00:05:53.180 --> 00:05:59.880 Look at verse 14, but again, he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that 00:05:59.880 --> 00:06:03.020 the governor was greatly amazed. 00:06:03.680 --> 00:06:08.340 What we see, starting in verse 11, we see this trial of Jesus. 00:06:09.400 --> 00:06:15.820 And as we look at the trial of Jesus, it's important for us to know in a world that speaks 00:06:15.820 --> 00:06:24.040 about injustice, that's not a word that is foreign to us and to our culture, that the trial of 00:06:24.040 --> 00:06:30.580 Jesus is the largest injustice that's ever been done to one individual. 00:06:31.440 --> 00:06:38.660 What we see happen and take place in this series of trials and conversations that Jesus will 00:06:38.660 --> 00:06:48.880 have filled in Matthew 27 is the greatest injustice known to humanity, the greatest building of 00:06:48.880 --> 00:06:50.960 injustices that we see. 00:06:51.960 --> 00:06:57.000 And when we look at the whole narrative of all of the Gospels where these are laid out for 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:02.920 us, we see that there were six injustices that were committed that night against Jesus. 00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:08.180 Six things that would cause protests to riot in a day like today. 00:07:08.740 --> 00:07:12.340 Six things that would cause people to say, that's not right. 00:07:12.420 --> 00:07:16.320 I don't stand for what has happened and what has taken place. 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:19.040 But yet it's what happened to Jesus. 00:07:20.440 --> 00:07:26.000 And yet everyone was silent, except for the call to crucify him. 00:07:26.820 --> 00:07:34.720 The first injustice that we see is that this trial happened at night and with no advanced 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:35.320 notice. 00:07:35.520 --> 00:07:37.560 Now, both of these things are illegal. 00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:39.680 So this is really 1A and 1B. 00:07:40.240 --> 00:07:45.720 Trials didn't happen at night, but yet this trial happened at night so that people who may 00:07:45.720 --> 00:07:47.840 come forward wouldn't come forward. 00:07:47.900 --> 00:07:49.380 And so it was hidden away. 00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:52.000 There was not notice that was given. 00:07:52.160 --> 00:07:56.900 So imagine this, right, like if you're on your way home, right, you shouldn't, but let's 00:07:56.900 --> 00:07:59.240 say you get caught for speeding. 00:07:59.400 --> 00:08:01.780 Maybe that's something that some of us struggle with, right? 00:08:01.980 --> 00:08:03.220 Let's say you get caught for speeding. 00:08:03.420 --> 00:08:07.720 Well, you know you're going to find out the date that you can stand before to defend the 00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:11.120 reason or to find out what's going to happen with this speeding ticket. 00:08:11.300 --> 00:08:14.160 And the same thing existed in the time of Christ. 00:08:14.320 --> 00:08:17.780 If you were going to stand trial, there was notice that would happen. 00:08:17.780 --> 00:08:22.400 But Jesus is betrayed, arrested, and put before trial. 00:08:22.940 --> 00:08:24.960 These are the events that we see. 00:08:25.460 --> 00:08:30.820 Both of these events were illegal according to Jewish custom. 00:08:31.760 --> 00:08:39.300 The second thing that we see is that the judges here are really acting as the prosecutors. 00:08:40.540 --> 00:08:46.340 Like we think that the Roman government is the one that is truly trying Jesus and the judges 00:08:46.340 --> 00:08:50.520 of Jesus, but Pilate and the government, they're just a figurehead. 00:08:51.180 --> 00:08:59.660 The men who will bring the charges about Christ will be the same ones who work to condemn Christ 00:08:59.660 --> 00:09:02.460 and who pronounce his judgment. 00:09:03.220 --> 00:09:11.180 So imagine you go into court and the judge is the one pleading for your guilt, whether you're 00:09:11.180 --> 00:09:12.820 guilty or not, right? 00:09:12.880 --> 00:09:15.180 The deck is stacked against you. 00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:17.520 The second injustice that we see. 00:09:18.260 --> 00:09:27.560 The third one, the witnesses that testify against Jesus present false testimony, and we know that 00:09:27.560 --> 00:09:31.160 because their testimonies contradict one another, right? 00:09:31.400 --> 00:09:34.180 They didn't have time to get their story straight. 00:09:34.180 --> 00:09:41.440 And as they go through in a just system, they would see, well, hold on, this person says one thing, this person says 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:47.400 another, this person says another, they're both against him, but they all can't be true because they 00:09:47.400 --> 00:09:49.980 contradict one another, and they would throw them out. 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:52.020 But that doesn't happen for Jesus. 00:09:53.280 --> 00:09:55.000 They're held as credible. 00:09:55.920 --> 00:10:05.460 Now, there were witnesses who spoke on behalf of Christ, but their testimony in Jewish custom, okay, if someone came 00:10:05.460 --> 00:10:10.840 forward and said, and they're held credible, no, I saw them, they were not speeding. 00:10:11.300 --> 00:10:13.380 And then another person, they were not speeding. 00:10:13.500 --> 00:10:14.360 They were not speeding. 00:10:14.360 --> 00:10:21.480 What would happen is eventually enough cases were built to where the judge would step in and say the charges are dismissed. 00:10:22.400 --> 00:10:34.020 And the witnesses who speak for Jesus, even though their stories line up, they're largely ignored, and they press forward with the trial. 00:10:34.700 --> 00:10:44.360 The sentence of crucifixion that is given to Jesus did not fit the accusation or the perceived crime. 00:10:45.180 --> 00:10:50.440 It would literally like being, getting sentenced to death for shoplifting, all right? 00:10:50.700 --> 00:10:57.560 Like, that's not what our courts, and if that happened to someone, we would all say, this is injustice that took place. 00:10:58.560 --> 00:10:59.740 This shouldn't be. 00:11:00.640 --> 00:11:03.800 But for Jesus, it's what they demanded. 00:11:04.700 --> 00:11:12.800 The last injustice that we see, and we'll read this in just a little bit, kind of foreshadowing what's going to happen. 00:11:12.980 --> 00:11:18.420 Pilate, the government leader, right, is blackmailed to give the people what they want. 00:11:19.140 --> 00:11:24.840 The leaders basically say to Pilate, if you don't do what we want, we'll riot. 00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:27.800 And you're like, what's the big deal of that? 00:11:27.900 --> 00:11:29.880 Like, how's that call in his hand? 00:11:30.420 --> 00:11:36.600 Well, if word gets back that Pilate can't keep the people under control, one of two things could happen to Pilate. 00:11:36.920 --> 00:11:45.200 Pilate could be removed from his power and from his seat and from authority, and what that would mean would he would lose his career that he had worked hard for. 00:11:45.280 --> 00:11:51.520 But the other piece with Pilate, with that, is if it got too out of control, it could cost him his life. 00:11:52.860 --> 00:12:05.020 And so here's a man who's looking at a situation where he doesn't see a way out that's right, but he at least sees a way out that doesn't condemn him. 00:12:06.300 --> 00:12:11.620 And so he does what the religious leaders in the crowd want. 00:12:12.720 --> 00:12:20.020 But verse 12 and verse 14, there's something very interesting that we see on behalf of Christ. 00:12:20.660 --> 00:12:35.420 As the charges that are false are brought before him, as lies are shared about him, as people who would speak truth about him are ignored, Jesus says nothing. 00:12:36.960 --> 00:12:39.240 And so it asks us the question, why? 00:12:40.200 --> 00:12:41.760 Why would he say nothing? 00:12:42.880 --> 00:12:48.120 Why not to take a moment and to use a phrase that we have, right, he's got his day in court. 00:12:48.120 --> 00:12:49.540 Why not defend himself? 00:12:50.540 --> 00:12:56.160 Why not say, no, all these people are lying and I can prove how what they're saying isn't true. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:12:58.440 Why wouldn't Jesus defend himself? 00:12:59.620 --> 00:13:07.460 Why wouldn't Jesus set the record straight and say, I know that you've got this charge of me and this charge of me and this charge of me, 00:13:07.560 --> 00:13:10.380 but let me tell you who I really am. 00:13:11.420 --> 00:13:13.660 Let me tell you where I'm really from. 00:13:13.760 --> 00:13:15.700 Let me tell you what I've come to do. 00:13:16.840 --> 00:13:28.420 Why does Jesus, in this moment, in this trial, where injustice after injustice after injustice has taken place, 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:32.220 why does Jesus not fight for himself? 00:13:33.800 --> 00:13:41.200 And the power of what's happening in this moment is not found in the words that are said, 00:13:41.880 --> 00:13:44.240 but it's found in the silence of Jesus. 00:13:45.240 --> 00:13:51.300 And it helps us understand that Jesus is the silent substitute. 00:13:53.240 --> 00:13:56.460 I want us this this. 00:14:18.400 --> 00:14:27.000 Now, maybe we've done different things, but in the court of God, we're all guilty. 00:14:27.720 --> 00:14:29.400 We all have sin. 00:14:29.540 --> 00:14:33.000 We've all committed these acts. 00:14:33.100 --> 00:14:36.820 We've all violated the will and the law of God. 00:14:37.200 --> 00:14:41.560 And Jesus is the only innocent person. 00:14:42.620 --> 00:14:47.120 No charge of wrong could ever be brought up against him. 00:14:47.360 --> 00:14:49.080 He didn't break the law. 00:14:49.480 --> 00:14:53.740 Jesus is the only person who can stand before --> 00:15:46.960 But not with Jesus. 00:15:48.600 --> 00:15:54.900 You know, an interesting thing is happening in this trial where injustice rings true time and time again. 00:15:55.980 --> 00:16:00.040 It wasn't the judgment of Pilate that condemned Jesus. 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:06.620 It wasn't the judgment of the chief priests and the elders that condemned Jesus. 00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:15.200 What condemned Jesus to death, why Jesus was the silent substitute, was the judgment of God. 00:16:16.720 --> 00:16:25.100 You know, as Jesus is standing there in that trial, as lie after lie after lie is shared. 00:16:26.100 --> 00:16:29.940 It doesn't matter what Pilate says. 00:16:30.820 --> 00:16:37.780 It doesn't matter what the chief priests and the elders and the Pharisees and the people say. 00:16:37.780 --> 00:16:47.740 The reason why Jesus is silent is God has already said guilty. 00:16:49.160 --> 00:16:51.600 Now, why would God do that? 00:16:52.800 --> 00:16:59.120 Why would God look at his son, who's innocent, and say guilty? 00:17:00.960 --> 00:17:04.820 You know, we talk about the story of Easter and the price that Jesus would pay. 00:17:05.460 --> 00:17:12.200 We talk about the reality for you and I, that Jesus paid the price for us. 00:17:13.320 --> 00:17:20.700 We paint a picture of a person standing before a judge who's been found guilty and who deserves a punishment. 00:17:21.100 --> 00:17:30.540 But what Christ does is he comes in and he says, I'll take on the punishment, I'll pay the debt, I'll restore everything, I'll make it right again. 00:17:30.760 --> 00:17:31.780 And that is true. 00:17:32.280 --> 00:17:34.120 That is the work that Jesus does. 00:17:34.560 --> 00:17:37.560 Jesus steps in and pays a debt on our behalf. 00:17:37.860 --> 00:17:41.660 Jesus steps in and takes on a punishment that we deserve. 00:17:41.660 --> 00:17:46.000 But there's more than that that takes place. 00:17:46.340 --> 00:17:48.680 Jesus didn't just pay the price. 00:17:49.100 --> 00:17:51.960 Jesus took on the debt. 00:17:53.440 --> 00:17:58.440 And that's why that who was innocent was made guilty. 00:17:59.940 --> 00:18:11.520 And that's why Jesus knew as he stood there that what awaited him at the cross had been set forth by God through the testimony of the prophet. 00:18:11.660 --> 00:18:12.660 That's why Jesus said that he was not. 00:18:12.660 --> 00:18:13.660 That's why Jesus said that he was not. 00:18:13.660 --> 00:18:14.660 That's why Jesus said that he was not. 00:18:14.660 --> 00:18:20.400 So it wasn't the judgment of Pilate that sent Jesus to the cross. 00:18:21.120 --> 00:18:24.400 It wasn't the judgment of the chief priest. 00:18:25.460 --> 00:18:27.520 It was the very judgment of God. 00:18:28.420 --> in a dream. 00:19:39.300 --> 00:19:46.360 Now the chief priest and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 00:19:47.160 --> 00:19:49.180 The governor again said to them,
