beach tree
a carpet of sand at your feet
your leaves look like a beautiful brain
you have been considering this coast
for a lifetime
i love watching your colours change
your thinning and thickening
and I wonder
what do you think of the boats?
what do you make of summer's pleasures?
what is your favourite season
the best time of your life
and the greatest thing you have seen?
what is your dearest memory?
is it the ducks at the foreshore this morning
or the wild geese flying overhead last night
perhaps another tree now lost from sight?
as my life returns to dream
i consider the beach tree and me
