The Tanya explains that there are two souls, an animal soul and a god-like soul, both of which reside within us. Every individual possesses an inclination for good, represented by the god-like soul, and an inclination for evil, represented by the animal soul.

The good inclination originates from the essence of god, while the evil inclination stems from the husk, the outermost layer of reality. When we choose good over evil, we connect with our divine essence, and when we choose evil, we stray from our true purpose.
