James is a dynamic book that provides some of the clearest and most practical moral teaching in the New Testament. He is unmistakably clear about the kinds of things followers of Jesus ought to be doing, and the kinds of things followers of Jesus ought not to be doing. But what if we’re missing something? What if all the ‘doing’ and ‘not doing’ is actually downstream of a more fundamental reality? What if it is our intimacy with Jesus that empowers us to reflect his goodness in the way we live our life? What if the answer isn’t trying harder but simply drawing closer to Jesus?
