कूपरहितं गृहम्

दशमे शतके राजा यशस्करदेवः काश्मीरदेशं पालयति स्म । कदाचित् राजभवनस्य पुरतः प्राणत्यागाय प्रयतमानं सज्जनं आनाय्य कारणम् अपृच्छत् राजा । तदा ज्ञातवान् यत् न्यायाधीशेन अन्याय्यः निर्णयः श्रावितः आसीत् इति । सज्जनः कूपसहितः कश्चन भागः पत्न्यै रक्षित्वा गृहं विक्रीतवान् आसीत् । धनसम्पादनाय अन्यदेशं प्रति गतः यावत् प्रत्यागतः तावता कूपसहितायाः भूमितः पत्नी निष्कासिता आसीत् । ततः राजा न्यायाधीशं, गृहस्य विक्रेतारम्, राजलेखकम् आनाय्य गृहस्य पत्रं परिशील्य ज्ञातवान् यत् राजलेखकः सहस्रं मुद्राः उत्कोचं प्राप्य 'कूपरहितं गृहं' इति पत्रे लिखितवान् इति । राजा कूपभूमिं भवनं च स्वामिने दापयित्वा क्रेतारं धनिकं देशात् निर्वासितं कृतवान् ।

In the tenth century, King Yashaskara was ruling the Kashmir region. One day, a man who was trying to take his own life was brought before the king and asked him the reason. The king then learned that an unjust decision had been made by the judge. The man had sold everything except a piece of land with a well for his wife to lead a life and had gone to another country to earn money. When he returned, his wife had been evicted from the land. The king then summoned the judge, the seller of the house, and the royal clerk, and upon examining the property documents, discovered that the clerk had received a thousand coins as a bribe and had written ‘house without a well’ in the document. The king then ordered the land with the well and the house to be returned to the rightful owner and exiled the wealthy buyer from the country.
