Forty men with knives. Four hundred and seventy Roman soldiers marching out of Jerusalem at nine at night to escort one small Jewish preacher safely to the coast. Two hundred infantry, seventy cavalry, two hundred spearmen, mobilized for a prisoner the empire had no real reason to care about. The conspiracy never had a chance. Then Luke shows us the commander’s letter, a careful blend of truth and self-promotion in which Claudius Lysias rewrites his own conduct to come out looking heroic. God uses every word of it anyway, because buried in the spin is the sentence that becomes Paul’s legal foundation for the next four years: there was no charge deserving death or imprisonment. A teenager, a tribune, and a self-promoting officer, none of them thinking they were on a mission, paved Paul’s road to Rome.
