Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we’re saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I’m Lauren Smyth, and this is a petition to get rid of the letter Z for all games of Scrabble and Bananagrams.
Z is the least-used letter in the English alphabet, along with Q, J, and X. Why does that matter? Well, it matters if you’re playing Scrabble, but it also matters if you’re trying to break a cipher.  Letter frequency can help associate symbols or numbers with letters. It’s also useful to consider if you’re typing out Morse code, because less frequently used letters have longer dot-dash patterns. 
On the flip side, the most commonly used letters are E, A, and R. That’s why all three of these letters are worth just one point in Scrabble and why you’ll find quite a few of them in the game box.
Again, why does this matter? Okay … maybe it doesn’t. But at least now you have a fact to whip out at your next workplace Christmas party.
