President Jay Rothman has been President of the system since 2022 and says that the board of regents is trying to fire him. Since Rothman took over, he has had to deal with free speech debates over pro-Palestinian protests. He also closed eight different university branches even as enrollment holds steady. His possible firing has drawn concern from Wisconsin assembly member David Murphy. Murphy, a republican, is the head of the college and universities committee in the state assembly. He represents the Village of Hortonville in Wisconsin which has around 3,000 people and contains no state universities. Murphy’s concern is with a lack of transparency from the board. He says Rothman deserves to know why he lost their confidence, even though they are not legally required to provide him a reason for termination. For WSUM News, I’m Nathan Jahn ALSO IN STATE NEWS, Gov. Tony Evers signs bills to combat PFAS contamination on Monday. The bills will give installation payments of 125 million dollars. PFAS are known as forever chemicals which will stay in the environment and human body for decades. Assembly Bills 130 and 131 are bipartisan bills the Wisconsin Senate passed in mid-March. In the 2023-25 budget, there was 125 million dollars set towards these chemicals, but Evers said in 2024 they should be doing more. Wisconsin Act 200 will give funding from the trust fund and support PFAS testing. In Wisconsin Act 201, new programs and requirements will work to address PFAS. The bills will amend the Spills Law. Individuals who did not cause PFAS contamination will not be held responsible for its clean up. It will also provide around 80 million dollars from the trust fund to a community grant program. Much of their work will be done through sampling water sources and working to stop or fix PFAS contamination. IN NATIONAL NEWS, The Artemis II mission broke Apollo’s farthest distance from Earth record on Monday. The Apollo 13 mission in 1970 had a record of 248,000 miles the astronauts traveled from Earth. Artemis II is expected to go 4,000 miles farther, hitting around 252,000 miles away from Earth. Orion is set to reach its maximum distance at around 7:07 PM eastern time, or 6:07 central time. Artemis II was launched the evening of April 1 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Their mission is set to last 10 days. During the mission, the crew is spending its first five hours split between handling lunar observations and taking images, where they will swap roles each hour. When Apollo missions were launched, they were limited by the amount of sunlight hitting the moon in their photos, with the far side not illuminated. The crew has been training through simulations and classes for months to help capture moon images for Earth. PASSING IT OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE Brewers open up season with a 7 and 2 record. The Brewers played their first game of the 2026 season last Thursday starting a series against the White Sox. They won that game at home 14 to 2 with pitcher Jacob Misorowski setting a franchise record for strikeouts on opening day. They would go on to sweep the White Sox at home and then win the next series 2 to 1 at home against the Rays. They then traveled to Kansas City to take on the Royals in a three game series. After the first game got rained out, the team split the doubleheader on Saturday and claimed a series victory on Sunday. The team is now ushering in the Bobby Jr era, a pet turtle that Pat Murphy pulled out of his pocket in an interview. The turtle is named after Royals player Bobby Witt Jr. The Brewers travel to Boston to take on the 2 and 7 Red Sox tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday. Tonight's game is at 5:45pm.
