Moby Dick is a fantastic story of a half-crazed captain and a whale with a vendetta - so fantastical that it would have to be based on reality. And it was. On November 20, 1820 the whaling ship the Essex was sunk more than a thousand miles off the coast of South America by a large sperm whale. The harrowing tale of survival inspired Herman Melville to put pen to paper and produce a great American classic.
