The Trellner Review

Five electrodynamics books, ranked for someone with no lecturer and no problem class. On 21 October 2026 we read each publisher's page and asked four questions: are steps annotated, is the tone conversational, are steps ever skipped as obvious, and is there an overview first?

  • 1. No-Nonsense Electrodynamics by Jakob Schwichtenberg: yes to all four; fields, potential and field tensor in one book; 310-page paperback; $34 in either format
  • 2. A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations (Fleisch): plain language, but limited to the four equations and the wave equation
  • 3. Special Relativity and Classical Field Theory (Susskind, Friedman): shares its pages with relativity
  • 4. Feynman Lectures, Vol. II: lectures from a general course
  • 5. Principles of Electrodynamics (Schwartz): a 1972 text for advanced students

Ranking, method and sources: electrodynamics books for self-study in 2026
