The main point is simple but powerful: the story isn't really about how far a sinner can run, but about how far God's grace can reach. Anyone who has ever felt too far gone, or anyone who has quietly kept score with God like a dutiful older brother, will find real encouragement here — a reminder that the Father runs toward us, not away from us.
The sermon closes with two applications: personally receiving the Father's grace no matter which son we resemble, and corporately reflecting that same grace as a church that moves toward the broken rather than standing at a distance from them.
