During a recent Catalyst Training, Jamie and Donna Winship and their coaches demonstrated the Identity Exchange process with an international participant who seemed to have it all together. She was exuberant, grateful, and full of life. Yet when they asked a simple question—“Where are you experiencing conflict right now?”—a longstanding family dispute over inherited land surfaced. That present tension led them back through a trail of memories to a shocking core wound from when she was only two years old.
In a war-torn region, her mother set her down and fled as guerrilla fighters approached. The rebels picked her up. Her father arrived, was nearly killed… and then one of the “enemies” looked into the little girl’s eyes and spared both their lives because of her.
When the coach asked, “Where was Jesus in that moment?” everything shifted. The woman realized the one holding her—the one who saw her when she was abandoned—was how Jesus was present. In that revelation she received her true identity: not powerless, unseen, or alone… but Reconciler. Ambassador.
And then the transformation became complete. She took that truth forward into her current family conflict and walked out of the session with clarity, courage, and a plan to bring peace.
This is what the Identity Exchange process looks like in real time: present struggle → core memory → encountering Jesus → receiving true identity → walking it out in the present.
