you, 00:07:04.440 --> 00:07:12.400 what is the vision of ministry that God has given you for outside the walls of this church? 00:07:13.520 --> 00:07:15.040 The second question I want to ask you, 00:07:15.820 --> 00:07:17.280 where is your ministry? 00:07:18.260 --> 00:07:23.320 Where has God strategically placed you and gifted you 00:07:23.320 --> 00:07:26.440 so that you can live for His name and for His glory? 00:07:26.440 --> 00:07:28.660 Now, I want to back this one really quick. 00:07:29.060 --> 00:07:30.580 Some of us say everywhere. 00:07:31.740 --> 00:07:32.800 Some of us say everywhere. 00:07:33.100 --> 00:07:35.800 Well, here's what I want to kind of challenge on that a little bit. 00:07:36.080 --> 00:07:39.440 Even Jesus defined where His ministry would take place, 00:07:39.560 --> 00:07:41.140 even though He never stopped. 00:07:41.500 --> 00:07:41.700 All right? 00:07:42.460 --> 00:07:43.940 Scripture is clear numerous times. 00:07:44.060 --> 00:07:47.520 We'll see one instance this morning where after doing ministry, 00:07:47.900 --> 00:07:49.800 Jesus kind of retreats and has a break. 00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:52.800 So if Jesus needed a break from His place of ministry, 00:07:52.980 --> 00:07:53.880 we do as well. 00:07:53.880 --> 00:07:55.500 So what is your ministry? 00:07:56.020 --> 00:07:57.640 Where is your ministry? 00:07:57.960 --> 00:07:59.740 And then the third that I want you to think is, 00:07:59.840 --> 00:08:01.760 is who is your ministry? 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:03.640 Who is your ministry? 00:08:04.500 --> 00:08:08.120 Like right now, when I'm thinking about my ministry outside of this place, 00:08:08.300 --> 00:08:11.680 there are two faces that continually come to mind for me. 00:08:12.080 --> 00:08:16.200 Two places of two men that I feel like God has placed in my life 00:08:16.200 --> 00:08:22.340 for a unique purpose for me to display and to share the gospel with them. 00:08:22.840 --> 00:08:28.280 And so we're not going to stand at the door and as you leave answer these three questions for me. 00:08:28.580 --> 00:08:33.400 But as you're growing in your faith, as you're growing in your response to the Lord, 00:08:33.560 --> 00:08:38.860 as you're looking at your life outside of these church walls to really embrace the great commission 00:08:38.860 --> 00:08:41.720 of what God has for you, what is your ministry? 00:08:42.160 --> 00:08:43.280 Where is your ministry? 00:08:43.520 --> 00:08:45.160 And then who is your ministry? 00:08:45.860 --> 00:08:52.780 And what I want us to see of what Jesus is going to do is that when we begin to embrace this, 00:08:52.840 --> 00:08:55.560 that Jesus calls us into ministry, all of us. 00:08:56.340 --> 00:09:01.160 Jesus prepares us for ministry, and then Jesus equips us for ministry. 00:09:01.700 --> 00:09:04.080 And that's what we're going to see in Luke chapter 9. 00:09:04.440 --> 00:09:07.380 Luke chapter 9 is one of my favorite chapters of the Bible. 00:09:07.380 --> 00:09:13.780 There's so much that's filled in this chapter of Scripture that, in fact, over the next— 00:09:13.780 --> 00:09:16.740 we've been doing like a chapter or two each week, 00:09:16.740 --> 00:09:23.560 but we're going to actually spend three weeks in Luke chapter 9 kind of working through this together 00:09:23.560 --> 00:09:32.220 as we begin to see Jesus' ministry is going to begin to head down a more narrowed and focused path with what He has. 00:09:32.420 --> 00:09:35.660 But then also something very important happens. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:42.280 Jesus begins to share in Luke 9 the invitation of ministry. 00:09:43.140 --> 00:09:45.200 And so Jesus has been modeling this. 00:09:45.980 --> 00:09:47.720 Jesus has been talking about this. 00:09:48.060 --> 00:09:53.220 But what we find in Luke chapter 9 is the invitation of ministry. 00:09:53.420 --> 00:09:55.780 And so let's start reading in verse 1. 00:09:55.780 --> 00:09:57.780 It says, 00:09:57.780 --> 00:10:05.580 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases. 00:10:06.380 --> 00:10:10.760 And he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. 00:10:11.520 --> 00:10:12.760 And he said to them, 00:10:12.760 --> 00:10:21.420 Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money, and do not have two tunics. 00:10:22.060 --> 00:10:26.480 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 00:10:27.020 --> 00:10:36.080 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them. 00:10:36.080 --> 00:10:42.200 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere. 00:10:42.860 --> 00:10:50.520 So Jesus has come to this ragtag group of twelve that He's called to follow Him and that have responded. 00:10:51.140 --> 00:10:54.200 And remember, they're coming from all different backgrounds. 00:10:54.540 --> 00:10:58.920 But none of them are coming from a background of ministry. 00:10:59.660 --> 00:11:00.860 You've got fishermen. 00:11:01.240 --> 00:11:03.060 You've got tax collectors. 00:11:03.500 --> 00:11:12.000 You've got this—Peter kind of comes from this, like, political, zealous crowd that's there that wants to overthrow the government. 00:11:12.260 --> 00:11:16.860 But, like, none of this group have been theologically trained. 00:11:17.540 --> 00:11:23.460 None of them have gone through a five-year process of building them through a leadership pipeline, 00:11:23.740 --> 00:11:26.520 of elevating them from position after position. 00:11:26.520 --> 00:11:32.080 But Jesus calls this group of people and is going to mobilize them. 00:11:32.340 --> 00:11:33.360 And here's going to be the key. 00:11:33.960 --> 00:11:39.360 Because there's so many of us sitting in here this morning, and you think to yourself, 00:11:39.800 --> 00:11:42.760 there's no way I can do that. 00:11:43.820 --> 00:11:44.980 There's no way. 00:11:45.660 --> 00:11:48.900 There's no way that I can have a ministry. 00:11:49.440 --> 00:11:50.720 I'm young in my faith. 00:11:51.680 --> 00:11:54.340 There's no way I can have a ministry. 00:11:54.340 --> 00:11:56.380 I don't know enough about the Bible. 00:11:57.380 --> 00:12:00.180 There's no way I can have a ministry. 00:12:00.480 --> 00:12:04.940 I'm an introvert who is petrified to speak to anyone. 00:12:05.920 --> 00:12:08.460 And there's no way I can have a ministry. 00:12:08.740 --> 00:12:09.820 I'm too busy. 00:12:10.980 --> 00:12:11.160 Right? 00:12:12.020 --> 00:12:19.840 But what we see is Jesus takes this group who could have reason after reason after reason. 00:12:19.840 --> 00:12:26.760 And not only does he mobilize them, Jesus gives him, in Luke chapter 9, power and authority to go. 00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:33.680 Now, this isn't the same thing that's going to happen, but it's similar of what takes place in the book of Acts. 00:12:34.280 --> 00:12:39.540 If you remember in Acts chapter 1, Jesus tells us that we'll receive authority and power to go. 00:12:39.980 --> 00:12:44.840 And then later on at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit falls on the believers, and they go. 00:12:45.020 --> 00:12:49.820 And through the power of God, they fulfill the ministry that God has for them. 00:12:49.940 --> 00:12:53.400 And this is what we see, and this is what God is doing in the life of the believer. 00:12:54.400 --> 00:12:56.080 Sure, you don't have enough knowledge. 00:12:57.460 --> 00:12:58.400 No one has it all. 00:12:59.580 --> 00:13:01.040 Sure, you're busy. 00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:02.280 We're all busy. 00:13:02.820 --> 00:13:05.240 Sure, you've got insecurities and reasons. 00:13:05.520 --> 00:13:09.280 We've all got insecurities and reasons that want to hold us back. 00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:16.360 But just in this moment, as Jesus gave them power and authority, Jesus does the same thing for you and I. 00:13:17.300 --> 00:13:19.740 But then Jesus does something neat here. 00:13:20.400 --> 00:13:29.200 And it's the same thing as we're leaning in on him in our life of what Jesus does in their life to what Jesus is going to do for us. 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:34.980 Their going is going to be based on dependency of him. 00:13:35.620 --> 00:13:40.580 Notice Jesus says, like, hey, leave some things behind. 00:13:41.760 --> 00:13:45.960 Leave your staff that would protect you. 00:13:46.980 --> 00:13:55.620 Leave your bag that would carry your money so that you can provide for yourself and your water that would be in it. 00:13:56.160 --> 00:14:00.520 Leave your bread and the basic nourishment that you would leave behind. 00:14:01.240 --> 00:14:08.580 And leave your tunic behind as well, which would provide comfort and shelter for them as they travel. 00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:18.460 What Jesus is saying that when we embark in ministry with him, he's not saying tomorrow when you go to work, if that's where your ministry spot is, to leave your wallet at home. 00:14:18.460 --> 00:14:25.000 But what Jesus is saying is, if you're going to do the work of God, you can't be dependent on yourself. 00:14:25.300 --> 00:14:28.320 You must be dependent on me. 00:14:29.040 --> 00:14:39.780 Because the work you're going to do is not the work that you're capable of, but it's the work that Jesus is capable of through you. 00:14:39.880 --> 00:14:49.380 And this is going to be important as we see Jesus is going to dive deeper and deeper every single time in Acts chapter 9 into the relationship with the disciples. 00:14:49.820 --> 00:14:54.380 Say, I've got a work for you to do, but you've got to depend on me to get you there. 00:14:54.560 --> 00:14:56.660 You've got to depend on me to sustain you. 00:14:56.760 --> 00:15:01.600 And you've got to depend on me to do the work that needs to be done. 00:15:02.240 --> 00:15:08.260 But Jesus is also very key that the work they're going to do is the kingdom work. 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:12.880 He says, as you go into these villages, you're going to heal. 00:15:13.740 --> 00:15:13.860 Right? 00:15:13.900 --> 00:15:14.560 Imagine that. 00:15:15.080 --> 00:15:16.920 Jesus says, I'm going to give you the power to heal. 00:15:17.820 --> 00:15:21.920 Jesus says to these disciples, I'm going to give you power and authority over demons. 00:15:23.160 --> 00:15:25.160 They've seen Jesus call out demons. 00:15:25.820 --> 00:15:27.260 They've seen what that looks like. 00:15:27.260 --> 00:15:30.560 And now Jesus is giving them the authority to do that as well. 00:15:31.100 --> 00:15:39.440 But Jesus says, as you do these things, make sure that you proclaim the kingdom of God. 00:15:40.020 --> 00:15:48.900 Here's a concern that we must address if we're going to do ministry that is focused on God's kingdom. 00:15:49.620 --> 00:15:54.400 You and I, we can do a lot of good works for people. 00:15:55.020 --> 00:15:56.260 We can be kind. 00:15:57.240 --> 00:15:58.760 We can meet physical needs. 00:15:59.640 --> 00:16:07.260 We can reach out and seek to live our lives in a position and posturing of service to those around us. 00:16:07.480 --> 00:16:10.020 I'm not saying that we should not do these things. 00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:11.240 In fact, we should. 00:16:11.480 --> 00:16:14.820 And it is based in God's word and truth that we do these things. 00:16:14.820 --> 00:16:28.660 But at some point in time, we use these as opportunities to share with and to talk about and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to work in the kingdom. 00:16:28.660 --> 00:16:31.160 Because it's not about the works. 00:16:31.160 --> 00:16:34.080 It's about the one who sends the workers. 00:16:35.660 --> 00:16:38.240 So we have to have our mind focused in on that. 00:16:39.040 --> 00:16:43.840 I heard a pastor say this years ago, and I've loved this and tried to embrace this in my life. 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:51.520 He said, unfortunately, so many times we go out into this world and we love people straight to hell. 00:16:52.620 --> 00:16:53.740 And here's what he meant. 00:17:08.740 But we never tell you about Jesus. 00:17:10.100 --> 00:17:20.760 And in that, we can leave you thinking all is well when Jesus needs to address the sinful heart that you have. 00:17:30.380 --> 00:17:35.740 And they go out and they come back to Jesus and they report all that's happened and all that's taken place. 00:17:36.220 --> 00:17:37.460 And then Jesus does something. 00:17:37.460 --> 00:17:45.080 And he takes this group of disciples and he withdraws away to a very small town where he can just be there with his disciples. 00:17:45.580 --> 00:17:47.400 But crowds of was one guy who was doing this. 00:17:54.020 --> 00:17:57.520 And now there's 12 that are going out and doing this in his name. 00:17:58.360 --> 00:18:02.780 And so the crowds begin to flock and begin to come and find out where Jesus is. 00:18:02.780 --> 00:18:05.260 And they find and they surround Jesus. 00:18:05.560 --> 00:18:09.320 And the Bible tells us that Jesus begins to teach and do be some grumbling that people are hungry. 00:18:28.220 --> 00:18:30.480 And it's hard because there's nowhere around. 00:18:30.480 --> 00:18:32.780 There's not a Walmart down the road, right? 00:18:32.960 --> 00:18:35.560 Where you can go and just provide a meal for them. 00:18:36.080 --> 00:18:39.320 And so the disciples come back with a logical plan. 00:18:39.720 --> 00:18:43.840 They say, Jesus, let's just send them away for food. 00:18:44.700 --> 00:18:46.940 But Jesus is going to step in and do something different. 00:18:47.660 --> 00:18:49.320 And here's what I want us to think of. 00:18:49.360 --> 00:18:54.480 As you think about the ministry, the what, the where, and the who God has for you. 00:18:55.000 --> 00:19:01.400 That oftentimes, logic can interfere with ministry
