जितेन्द्रियता

पञ्चदशवर्षीयः कश्चन तरुणः कञ्चन महात्मानम् उपसर्प्य संन्यासदीक्षां याचते । पुनः पुनः याचनेन महात्मा तस्य परीक्षां करोति । परीक्षया तरुणस्य जितेन्द्रियता साधिता अस्ति इति महात्मना ज्ञातम् । अतः संन्यासादीक्षां दास्यामि इत्युक्त्वा तं तरुणम् आशिषा अनुगृह्णाति । सः एव भाविनि काले 'महात्मा ज्ञानेश्वरः' इति ख्यातः जातः ।

A fifteen-year-old youth approached a saint, requesting initiation into renunciation. The saint tested him repeatedly, and through the trials realized that the boy had mastered self-control. Then the saint blessed him, saying he would grant initiation. In time, that youth became famous as Mahatma Jnaneshvara.
