faculty to make this transition here."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":256.579,"endTime":258.65,"body":"In two months we will have finally gotten through our"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":258.65,"endTime":263.87,"body":"first year, but putting together templates for courses and migrating"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":263.87,"endTime":267.29,"body":"content from the other learning management system into the templates"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":267.29,"endTime":269.93,"body":"and getting it reorganized and trying to make all those"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":269.93,"endTime":270.78,"body":"modifications."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":270.79,"endTime":275.48,"body":"So I have been primarily heads down doing that for"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":275.54,"endTime":276.56,"body":"probably eight months."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":277.19,"endTime":280.1,"body":"Things are starting to loosen up because now we can"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":280.1,"endTime":284.06,"body":"roll over courses from one term to another, make those"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":284.06,"endTime":287.66,"body":"modifications, and so now it's starting to become a little"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":287.66,"endTime":292.1,"body":"more enjoyable instead of just grinding and just repetitive stuff."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":292.49,"endTime":296.54,"body":"Is now the questions are becoming more interesting on how"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":296.54,"endTime":299.57,"body":"to really use the learning management system to its full"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":299.57,"endTime":300.38,"body":"capacity."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":300.39,"endTime":303.32,"body":"So my typical day when I start the day is"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":303.32,"endTime":305.18,"body":"I have a morning routine I have."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":305.7,"endTime":306.78,"body":"Feedly running."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":307.2,"endTime":310.05,"body":"So I have a lot of blogs that I'm reviewing"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":310.07,"endTime":312.9,"body":"and just keeping up on my own personal learning and"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":312.9,"endTime":316.83,"body":"then certainly checking through emails and after that, is it"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":316.83,"endTime":320.07,"body":"really taking care of meetings, working with different faculty who"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":320.35,"endTime":324.03,"body":"have a request for assistance or want to learn something"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":324.03,"endTime":324.48,"body":"new?"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":325.05,"endTime":328.8,"body":"Or I have projects that I'm working on building like"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":328.8,"endTime":332.85,"body":"standalone courses in the LMS in order to help"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":332.85,"endTime":337.08,"body":"faculty learn a new set of skills or putting together"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":337.08,"endTime":338.67,"body":"a video or so."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":338.67,"endTime":339.8,"body":"It's very varied."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":339.81,"endTime":343.44,"body":"There's no day is the same, and I always just"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":343.44,"endTime":347.73,"body":"try to work on building resources to help my faculty"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":347.73,"endTime":349.92,"body":"do what they do at a higher level."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":350.16,"endTime":351.18,"body":"So that's what I do."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":351.81,"endTime":353.76,"body":"What kind of projects do you find fun?"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":354.27,"endTime":356.7,"body":"Ones that are just not repetitive."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":356.79,"endTime":359.01,"body":"So right now, building courses is just a lot of"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":359.01,"endTime":361.92,"body":"loading content in. The things that I find fun is"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":361.92,"endTime":366.36,"body":"when I really get to sit down with an instructor"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":366.99,"endTime":372.09,"body":"and look over their course and we start having this"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":372.09,"endTime":376.74,"body":"collaborative back and forth to determine what we could do"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":376.74,"endTime":379.98,"body":"to make an experience better for the students."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":380.16,"endTime":383.64,"body":"A lot of it is really educating the faculty we"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":383.64,"endTime":387.06,"body":"have in our college right now faculty who have been"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":387.06,"endTime":389.82,"body":"primarily face to face instructors."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":390.33,"endTime":393.06,"body":"And so now I'm showing them how to use the"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":393.06,"endTime":398.79,"body":"learning management system to basically amplify what they're able to"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":398.79,"endTime":402.63,"body":"do in the classroom and provide rewarding experiences for the"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":402.63,"endTime":403.23,"body":"students."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":403.8,"endTime":406.32,"body":"So any time I can do that, showing them how"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":406.32,"endTime":410.55,"body":"to use active learning methods or universal design for learning"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":410.82,"endTime":414.03,"body":"in order to provide better supports and choice in the"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":414.03,"endTime":414.99,"body":"student experience."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":415.02,"endTime":415.65,"body":"Those things."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":415.65,"endTime":418.56,"body":"For me, I find fun because there's lots of great"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":418.56,"endTime":423.21,"body":"science on how to learn and we're just really not"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":423.21,"endTime":426.12,"body":"tapping into it to the degree that I think we"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":426.12,"endTime":426.57,"body":"could."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":427.02,"endTime":429.51,"body":"Now it's starting to become a lot more fun for"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":429.51,"endTime":432.03,"body":"me where I'm at, because we're getting to this LMS."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":435.27,"endTime":437.04,"body":"Now let's use the LMS."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":437.34,"endTime":439.02,"body":"What are your biggest challenges?"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":439.44,"endTime":444.26,"body":"We talk about mindset for students all the time between"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":444.27,"endTime":446.58,"body":"a fixed and a growth mindset and."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":447.53,"endTime":451.85,"body":"But my biggest challenge is when I run into faculty"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":451.85,"endTime":455.84,"body":"who have a fixed mindset that, Oh, I can't learn"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":455.84,"endTime":458.24,"body":"this, I don't know how to use technology."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":458.24,"endTime":462.41,"body":"And I'm thinking to myself, We've had desktop computers on"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":462.41,"endTime":464.15,"body":"our desk for 40 years."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":464.24,"endTime":466.0,"body":"We need to get past this."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":466.01,"endTime":467.78,"body":"I don't know how to use a computer."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":468.05,"endTime":472.55,"body":"I find that often frustrating, or when instructors will take"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":472.55,"endTime":474.47,"body":"a shortcut, that they won't buy"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":474.47,"endTime":479.12,"body":"what's out there is good research, and they're doing it"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":479.33,"endTime":482.51,"body":"doing things as a convenience where if they took a"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":482.51,"endTime":486.77,"body":"little bit of extra time, they would be able to"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":486.92,"endTime":491.27,"body":"provide a better experience that would in turn provide less"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":491.27,"endTime":495.35,"body":"work for them just by doing good instructional design and"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":495.35,"endTime":496.34,"body":"those type of things."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":496.52,"endTime":498.68,"body":"Those are the things that I'm working hard to get"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":498.68,"endTime":499.7,"body":"faculty passed."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":499.82,"endTime":502.61,"body":"What skills do you find most useful in your work?"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":502.97,"endTime":505.73,"body":"There's a variety of skill sets that I'm finding more"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":505.73,"endTime":506.46,"body":"and more important."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":506.48,"endTime":510.47,"body":"One is in the area of productivity and time management"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":510.47,"endTime":514.82,"body":"and project management being able to block out time on"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":514.82,"endTime":517.55,"body":"your calendar to do some deep work type things."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":517.55,"endTime":520.159,"body":"So that that is certainly one of the skill sets."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":520.82,"endTime":524.0,"body":"One of the skill sets that I've found to be"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":524.0,"endTime":530.24,"body":"absolutely invaluable is knowing how to edit HTML code, being"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":530.24,"endTime":534.56,"body":"able to have no fear by flipping it in to"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":534.56,"endTime":537.68,"body":"code and going in and cleaning up junk."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":537.77,"endTime":540.38,"body":"Because when you move things, when you copy things over"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":540.38,"endTime":542.84,"body":"from a word document, it brings all of this extra"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":542.84,"endTime":546.05,"body":"garbage in and you have to spend quite a bit"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":546.05,"endTime":547.31,"body":"of time cleaning it up."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":547.58,"endTime":550.37,"body":"But just knowing the code, knowing just going in there"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":550.37,"endTime":552.62,"body":"and making a tweak to it, that is certainly has"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":552.62,"endTime":555.5,"body":"been a skill that is served me quite well."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":555.86,"endTime":560.03,"body":"And also manipulating spreadsheets and being able to collect the"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":560.03,"endTime":563.45,"body":"data so you can report out what successes that you've"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":563.45,"endTime":567.08,"body":"had, how successful programs have been, and the usage of"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":567.08,"endTime":567.71,"body":"different things."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":567.74,"endTime":569.66,"body":"Those are some of the things that come to mind"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":569.66,"endTime":570.11,"body":"right now."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":570.59,"endTime":573.71,"body":"What advice would you give to a new instructional designer?"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":574.67,"endTime":577.85,"body":"That's a good question, really is do a lot of"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":577.85,"endTime":579.23,"body":"listening, right?"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":579.23,"endTime":580.38,"body":"Listen to,"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":580.4,"endTime":584.03,"body":"don't come with solutions on top of mind for your"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":584.03,"endTime":584.75,"body":"faculty."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":585.11,"endTime":588.38,"body":"Really try to understand what the problem is that they're"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":588.38,"endTime":591.44,"body":"facing and what they're really hoping to do and be"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":591.44,"endTime":592.64,"body":"able to listen to that."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":593.0,"endTime":595.82,"body":"The other thing which has served me well over the"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":595.82,"endTime":598.52,"body":"years is this idea of working out loud."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":598.76,"endTime":602.03,"body":"The idea of working out loud is you you will"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":602.03,"endTime":606.59,"body":"get email coming in and very often the same questions"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":606.68,"endTime":607.61,"body":"for each email."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":607.61,"endTime":610.7,"body":"You need to respond because you need to solve individuals"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":610.7,"endTime":611.33,"body":"problems."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":611.48,"endTime":614.15,"body":"But if you work out loud and you have a"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":614.15,"endTime":618.05,"body":"blog, for example, that you answer the question in a"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":618.05,"endTime":621.98,"body":"blog, you can then very easily just grab the link"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":622.25,"endTime":624.71,"body":"and share it back out to somebody else who has"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":624.71,"endTime":629.15,"body":"the same question, because you've spent time crafting this wonderful"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":629.15,"endTime":632.24,"body":"post, but also if you have a blog and it's"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":632.24,"endTime":637.58,"body":"public in nature, other people can find out about you."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":637.58,"endTime":641.18,"body":"They can find out about solutions that you have created,"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":641.39,"endTime":645.86,"body":"but also find out about your institution that helps later"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":645.86,"endTime":647.39,"body":"as you're looking."},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":647.42,"endTime":650.0,"body":"When I was applying for jobs, one of the things"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":650.0,"endTime":652.88,"body":"that I would do is say, Please Google me, because"},{"speaker":"STAN","startTime":652.88,"endTime":656.21,"body":"if you Google me, you will find a wealth
