Athlete Mindset

Teresa Brown shares space with Lisa Bonta Sumii in this episode of SportsEpreneur for a candid discussion about mental health–specifically struggles related to body dysmorphia. She is a high-performing powerlifter, and she also works as an elementary school teacher. Her passion for the sport and for teaching truly shines through in her voice.
A major topic covered in this episode that we want to bring attention to:
“female athlete triad” | A combination of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis, commonly seen in adolescent and young adult female athletes.
Teresa is open about her struggles with body dysmorphia related to her sport and she is a proponent of therapy. She acknowledges the “line between living your life and also recognizing that [she] wanted to compete at the highest level possible” (13:57). Once entering the powerlifting arena, she was “absolutely addicted from day one” (6:52). She found a community around powerlifting and gained a sense of fulfillment in the competition atmosphere. She believes that we need to “recognize our bodies for what they are able to do and perform for us” (8:52). Teresa makes real connections in this episode with her unfiltered honesty.
Teresa has overcome body dysmorphia and physical injuries throughout the course of her career. She was able to accept the fact that she needed more than just the sport and that it could not be her “everything” (34:09). She has always been able to bounce back and pursue her passions despite obstacles. “Our stories in life impact our purpose and our passion” (26:58) and these stories deserve to be told.
