The largest manhunt in Wyoming history has begun.
After escaping the Park County Jail in March 1939, Earl Durand leaves two peace officers dead and disappears into the rugged mountains of northwestern Wyoming.
What follows is unlike anything the American West had ever witnessed.
Sheriffs.
Deputies.
Federal agents.
Bloodhounds.
Airplanes.
National Guardsmen.
Artillery.
Even aerial bombing plans.
Hundreds of men converge on Clark's Fork Canyon believing they have finally cornered one of the greatest wilderness trackers the Rocky Mountains had ever produced.
Instead, Earl Durand turns the hunt against them.
In Part Two of this three-part Rocky Mountain Reckoning investigation, we examine:
• Earl Durand's violent jailbreak from the Park County Jail
• The deaths of Town Marshal Chuck Lewis and Deputy D.M. Baker
• How Wyoming organized the largest manhunt in state history
• The infamous "Your Beloved Enemy" letter
• Clark's Fork Canyon and Earl's mountain fortress
• The deaths of Arthur Argento and Orville Linabary
• How one man outmaneuvered hundreds of searchers
• Why military weapons—including artillery and aircraft—were ultimately brought into the hunt
This isn't simply the story of a fugitive.
It's the story of fear, community, impossible decisions, and one of the most remarkable tactical escapes in American criminal history.
Most importantly, we remember the victims whose names deserve to stand alongside the legend that has too often overshadowed them.
