सूत्रद्वयम्

यदा रावणः अन्तिमश्वासोच्छ्वासं कुर्वन् आसीत् तदा रामः सुव्यवस्थितजीवनसञ्चालनस्य सूत्राणि कानि इति ज्ञातुं लक्ष्मणं रावणस्य अन्तिकं प्रेषयति । लक्ष्मणः गत्वा जीवनस्य महत्त्वपूर्णमन्त्रः भव्यसूत्रं च किमस्ति इति रावणं पृच्छति । तदा रावणः स्वस्य जीवनस्य अनुभवाधारेण कथयति 'शिष्टाचारजीवनस्य द्वे सूत्रे स्तः । प्रथमं तु - श्रेष्ठं कार्यं कर्तुं कदापि विलम्बः न करणीयः । द्वितीयं - कुत्सितकार्ये शीघ्रता न करणीया' इति ।

When Ravana was breathing his last, Rama sent Lakshmana to learn from him the principles of proper conduct in life. Lakshmana asked Ravana what the most important lessons were. Ravana, speaking from his life’s experience, said: “There are two rules for a disciplined life. First—never delay in doing a noble deed. Second—never be quick to do a bad deed.”
