February 6, 2026: New START Expiration and Global Security Shifts

Show Notes

In today's episode, we delve into a critical juncture in global security as we examine the expiration of the New START treaty, marking a profound shift in international relations. Once the cornerstone of nuclear arms control between the United States and Russia, New START's lapse signals a new era of uncertainty and potential instability. Originally signed in 2010, this treaty was the last remaining agreement that imposed strategic limits on nuclear arsenals and fostered transparency through verification mechanisms. However, geopolitical tensions and mutual accusations of non-compliance have led to its demise. The pandemic and Russia's suspension of cooperation amid its military actions in Ukraine further eroded trust, dismantling a vital pillar of global stability. With no binding limits on their nuclear capabilities, both nations now have the liberty to expand and modernize their arsenals, heightening the risk of an arms race. This episode provides an in-depth analysis of the implications of this development for international peace and security. Join us as we explore the complexities of nuclear diplomacy and the challenges that lie ahead in maintaining global stability in a world without New START.
