This week we visit pre-WWII Japan in
Memoirs of a Geisha. This movie… is well… a doozy. Based off the controversial fictional novel of the same name, both versions try to grasp at Japanese sub-culture through a western lens. We get to feast on beautiful set design and costumes, and of course John Williams masterful score, but the jumbled mess of melodrama and the creepy “romance” makes this movie nothing but pretty makeup on a turd. It also has us wondering why the hell the damn movie isn't in Japanese??
Fumbler Score: 5.7
