her home. 00:04:08.060 --> 00:04:12.340 Now, if you're wondering, Bo, like, where in the world is the Christmas story in what you just read, 00:04:12.420 --> 00:04:16.180 this is part of it that gets left out for us from time to time. 00:04:16.180 --> 00:04:26.660 In fact, this dialogue is happening probably somewhere about eight to nine months before the traditional Christmas story that we think of. 00:04:26.700 --> 00:04:29.700 And it's a song that Mary sings. 00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:38.380 And so we want to look at this song and see what God is communicating through his servant Mary, the mother of Christ. 00:04:38.660 --> 00:04:44.900 And the first thing that I want us to look at in these verses this morning is simply Mary's response. 00:04:45.900 --> 00:04:51.180 So let's back up a little bit to understand the story and to remind ourselves. 00:04:51.580 --> 00:04:57.920 So Mary is a teenage girl, probably somewhere between the ages of 13 to 15 years old, 00:04:57.960 --> 00:05:03.660 and finds out from the angel Gabriel that God's favor is on her. 00:05:04.040 --> 00:05:05.100 Now, I think that's important. 00:05:05.540 --> 00:05:09.100 It doesn't begin that you're going to have a son and his name's going to be Jesus. 00:05:09.100 --> 00:05:12.960 It begins with God's favor rests upon you. 00:05:14.320 --> 00:05:21.020 And that this virgin Mary will conceive a son as a virgin through the power of the Spirit of God, 00:05:21.080 --> 00:05:27.040 and his name will be Jesus, and he will reign over God's kingdom forever. 00:05:27.880 --> 00:05:32.760 And Gabriel also tells her that her relative, and we don't know how old Elizabeth is, 00:05:32.760 --> 00:05:41.960 but the Bible says that she's an old age, has also conceived a son, even though she is thought to be barren. 00:05:42.940 --> 00:05:47.680 And her son will be John the Baptist, the one who will go out into the wilderness, 00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:52.340 preparing the way and declaring for the coming Messiah. 00:05:53.100 --> 00:06:00.840 And so what we find with Mary at the end of this dialogue with Gabriel is that she trusts God. 00:06:01.340 --> 00:06:02.440 She trusts Him. 00:06:03.280 --> 00:06:07.280 And then she leaves to go and be with Elizabeth. 00:06:07.960 --> 00:06:16.540 Now, this journey this teenage girl takes from her town to where Elizabeth is would have taken somewhere between 10 to 14 days. 00:06:16.540 --> 00:06:22.860 It says that the army, when the army would march from this location to that location, it would take them 10 days. 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:27.640 And so let's say that Mary is at her best, could do it in 10, 00:06:27.740 --> 00:06:33.320 but if she takes a little bit more time moving from day to day, probably somewhere more around 00:06:41.720 --> 00:06:45.880 She's not posting on Instagram her different journeys on her way there, right? 00:06:46.460 --> 00:06:52.920 And so she walks in and the proclamation is made that Mary is there. 00:06:53.300 --> 00:06:59.460 And the Bible tells us that when Elizabeth finds out that Mary is there, a few things happen. 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:06.200 Number one, the baby in Elizabeth's womb leaps with joy, right? 00:07:06.520 --> 00:07:09.620 The power of the Spirit of God of what God is doing. 00:07:10.500 --> 00:07:13.260 And the birth of these two kids. 00:07:14.200 --> 00:07:23.440 And when Mary is there with Christ in her womb, very early on in her pregnancy, the baby leaps. 00:07:24.260 --> 00:07:29.760 Elizabeth says in that moment that Mary is blessed, that her baby is blessed. 00:07:29.760 --> 00:07:36.060 And then she says, why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 00:07:36.840 --> 00:07:40.160 Acknowledging the Savior Christ and who he is. 00:07:41.280 --> 00:07:42.960 And then Mary goes into a song. 00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:47.960 Now this kind of seems weird in our culture, in our context, right? 00:07:48.040 --> 00:07:54.640 Like imagine you've got a relative that you haven't seen in a while and they come to your house and you greet them with a hug. 00:07:54.640 --> 00:08:01.100 And you tell them how blessed you are that they've come to visit you and then all of a sudden they just go into full-blown musical, right? 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:01.980 And start singing, right? 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:03.600 Well, this is kind of what happens. 00:08:03.760 --> 00:08:10.760 Now, we don't know if it's just spur of the moment that this song comes to Mary through the leading of the Spirit. 00:08:11.400 --> 00:08:18.920 We don't know that on her journey, as it's already been seen, that Mary, even at her young age, is a mature woman of faith. 00:08:18.920 --> 00:08:27.000 That as she's journeying on, she's writing as the Spirit of God leads her, the lyrics and the words to this song. 00:08:27.520 --> 00:08:40.720 We don't know, but we know that what we gain in this is Mary's response to not only all that she had experienced since Gabriel came to her, 00:08:40.880 --> 00:08:51.720 but this song that she sings is all that Mary has experienced in her young life as far as it comes to her relationship with the Lord. 00:08:52.780 --> 00:08:59.880 In Mary's testimony and song, it's not just one that's writing about God's faithfulness over the last 10 to 14 days. 00:09:00.520 --> understand these lyrics and the power of what they're communicating. 00:09:17.520 --> 00:09:19.660 Look back at verse 46 and 47. 00:09:20.660 --> 00:09:37.860 Literally, Mary's song says from the very beginning that she desires to enlarge God. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:43.720 She wants to make God larger, make God greater. 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:49.020 Now, she can't, but what it means is she wants to you've seen before is hidden, but now it's under a microscope so that you can see. 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:16.900 My soul magnifies the Lord, she says, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. 00:10:17.140 --> 00:10:25.180 Now, I can imagine while her spirit rejoices that her days have been a little bit stressful. 00:10:26.440 --> 00:10:32.680 I don't think it's too far of a leap to say since Mary got that news almost two weeks ago 00:10:32.680 --> 00:10:35.520 that there's been some sleepless nights. 00:10:35.520 --> 00:10:37.620 There's been some anxious moments. 00:10:37.940 --> 00:10:44.960 She trusts the Lord, yes, but it's the battle and the practicality of living that out in her obedience to God. 00:10:45.080 --> 00:10:54.840 But what she says is, in spite of all of this, my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. 00:10:56.600 --> 00:11:01.860 Mary's desperation for who God is and her realization that she needs to be saved. 00:11:02.280 --> 00:11:10.240 And what we see in this, and this is why I shared with you earlier, it's not just a song about God's faithfulness in the moment, 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:16.640 but it's a song about what Mary knows about God and the existence in her entire life. 00:11:16.760 --> 00:11:23.220 And even going all the way back in the time in the life of her people, of God's faithfulness to Israel, 00:11:24.280 --> 00:11:25.300 is what she declares. 00:11:25.720 --> 00:11:35.180 And over the course of her song, she shares these things of where her joy can be found and why she would magnify him. 00:11:35.400 --> 00:11:41.980 She sings of his might and his strength, that he's larger and stronger than anything in this world 00:11:41.980 --> 00:11:44.760 and anything that you and I could imagine. 00:11:45.280 --> 00:11:53.780 And in his power and his strength, though, she sings of and declares his mercy, his compassion, and his kindness toward all people. 00:11:54.380 --> 00:12:00.020 She declares his holiness, that he is because he is mighty and 00:14:45.020 --> 00:14:54.140 he is strong and he is filled with mercy and love and that he and he alone is holy and that 00:14:54.140 --> 00:15:00.260 he loves us and he steps in with us and he speaks to us and we know him. 00:15:01.460 --> 00:15:07.360 And so the root, the basis of this song is the depth out of who Mary is as she knows him. 00:15:07.980 --> life, she will lose her husband and she will watch her very son be betrayed, beaten, tried, and executed. 00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:11.840 So how was Mary blessed? 00:16:13.740 --> 00:16:15.640 How many going to give us three opportunities in this song that she sings where she talks about kingdom blessing. 00:16:52.100 --> 00:16:55.320 Of what it means to be blessed as a follower of Christ.
