9 00:00:40.300 --> 00:00:43.814 And so hopefully we can get us a pretty weekend. 10 00:00:43.862 --> 00:00:51.340 But what we're going to see this week is we've seen the flood and now it's going to be what happens next. 11 00:00:52.510 --> 00:01:02.442 And then over the next several weeks, what we'll see is kind of the formation of the world as we see it today as we journey from this point forward in generation. 12 00:01:02.506 --> 00:01:08.020 So in fact, in a couple of weeks, we'll actually see the biblical record of people. 13 00:01:08.630 --> 00:01:32.102 And they're not going to list countries that we're familiar with, but in a couple of weeks we'll see that post flood, within three generations, we see people as far south globally as Ethiopia, as far north as Kazakhstan, as far east as Iran, and as far west as Libya. 14 00:01:32.246 --> 00:01:35.558 And so we see this spread of humanity. 15 00:01:35.734 --> 00:01:38.182 We see them mobilizing. 16 00:01:38.326 --> 00:01:43.102 We see civilizations built and established, all. 17 00:01:43.156 --> 00:01:46.110 Coming from this man Noah. 18 00:01:46.690 --> 00:01:52.094 And what we will look at this morning are the early formations of what. 19 00:01:52.132 --> 00:01:54.542 We will see in future generations. 20 00:01:54.606 --> 00:01:59.540 So let's read verses 18 through 21. 21 00:02:00.310 --> 00:02:07.730 It says, the sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shim, Ham, and Jacob. 22 00:02:08.630 --> 00:02:11.074 Aham was the father of Canaan. 23 00:02:11.122 --> 00:02:13.174 And this is going to be very important for us. 24 00:02:13.212 --> 00:02:26.570 Verse 19, these three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed, meaning that from these men that the nations are formed. 25 00:02:27.630 --> 00:02:39.610 Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard, and he drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. 26 00:02:39.770 --> 00:02:58.342 And so what we're going to talk about this morning in the first introduction to this man, Noah, who up until what we'll get to eventually, we've seen in Noah's life this deep layer of dedication and obedience to the Lord, to the point when we talked about a couple of weeks ago, we talked about Noah, that Noah as God is instructing him. 27 00:02:58.396 --> 00:03:10.742 We don't even have a record of Noah speaking right, which we see in Scripture, we're going to see as men encounter and hear from the Lord and converse and rationalize and talk through. 28 00:03:10.796 --> 00:03:12.838 We're going to see this dialogue exist. 29 00:03:12.934 --> 00:03:14.502 But we haven't heard from Noah. 30 00:03:14.566 --> 00:03:16.730 Noah heard and Noah did. 31 00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:20.880 But in this account, what we're going to see from Noah is a little bit different. 32 00:03:21.410 --> 00:03:23.466 We're going to see Noah's sin. 33 00:03:23.658 --> 00:03:27.690 And then what comes from Noah's sin is his shame. 34 00:03:27.770 --> 00:03:28.560 All right? 35 00:03:29.330 --> 00:03:30.714 So what is Noah's sin? 36 00:03:30.762 --> 00:03:32.426 Noah's sin was drunkenness. 37 00:03:32.458 --> 00:03:33.402 What is Noah's shame? 38 00:03:33.466 --> 00:03:34.954 His shame was nakedness. 39 00:03:35.002 --> 00:03:37.220 All right, this is here what we see. 40 00:03:37.910 --> 00:03:53.160 And Noah's sin caused him to position himself both physically and spiritually in a way that created shame in his life. 41 00:03:53.530 --> 00:04:03.990 And so as we start out, we'll talk about a little bit with sin and shame, but also what God uses for us to the power of the Holy Spirit of conviction. 42 00:04:04.070 --> 00:04:20.350 See, because unrepentant sin produces something, just as Noah did and just as you and I do, unrepentant sin produces something in our lives that is not beneficial for us, and it's shame. 43 00:04:20.930 --> 00:04:33.170 But God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, desires to see us in our sin, experience something not shame, but instead to experience conviction. 44 00:04:33.590 --> 00:04:41.954 So as we talk through this, what I want us to kind of lay some groundwork on is there is a difference between conviction and shame. 45 00:04:42.002 --> 00:04:47.442 And so let's talk about this just briefly as we understand this passage of scripture. 46 00:04:47.506 --> 00:04:59.238 First, it can be difficult, I want to acknowledge it can be difficult to determine and to differentiate in your life and in my life the difference between shame and conviction. 47 00:04:59.334 --> 00:05:17.166 Because shame oftentimes masquerades itself as conviction that you and I as followers of Jesus Christ can fall into a pattern of sin or commit a sin and think what we are experiencing is conviction. 48 00:05:17.278 --> 00:05:28.040 But really what we're experiencing is shame, which isn't from God, but conviction, which is from God. 49 00:05:28.490 --> 00:05:34.742 And so I want us to be able to understand the difference in a little bit in the similarities as well. 50 00:05:34.876 --> 00:05:36.342 So here's where it becomes difficult. 51 00:05:36.476 --> 00:05:41.946 Shame and conviction both produce things in our lives. 52 00:05:42.128 --> 00:05:51.150 Shame and conviction can both produce an emotional response, but they also can produce a change in behavior. 53 00:05:51.570 --> 00:05:55.098 Shame can do that and so can conviction. 54 00:05:55.194 --> 00:06:11.582 The difference is, and we'll see this, is that shame's emotional response and shame's change will both be bound to sin, connected to sin and feeding off of your sin or my sin. 55 00:06:11.726 --> 00:06:15.846 But convictions change is bound to the. 56 00:06:15.868 --> 00:06:17.480 Forgiveness and grace of God. 57 00:06:17.930 --> 00:06:19.880 There's the end goal for both. 58 00:06:20.250 --> 00:06:24.290 In shame, it's stay bound to your sin. 59 00:06:24.450 --> 00:06:29.180 In conviction, it's that the grace and forgiveness of God has set you free. 60 00:06:30.110 --> 00:06:38.838 And the difference of those in shame, it seeks to numb the pain of the sin. 61 00:06:39.014 --> 00:06:50.270 So not how do I deal with my sin, but how do I hide externally and internally the sin that I've committed? 76 00:08:13.568 --> 00:08:15.980 An identity of who I am in Christ. 77 00:08:16.350 --> 00:08:24.286 So is who I am in Christ reflective in who I am and the things that I do, not only just in the things I believe or the. 78 00:08:24.308 --> 00:08:25.070 Things that I say. 79 00:08:25.140 --> 00:08:34.018 But do we see this transformative work inside of us, this sanctification process in us as conviction draws us to that? 80 00:08:34.104 --> 00:08:43.010 Whereas shame is identity focused in that it seeks or it attempts to rob you of your identity of who you are in God? 81 00:08:43.160 --> 00:08:47.174 One says that I am a forgiven child of God. 82 00:08:47.292 --> 00:08:49.142 That's what conviction says. 83 00:08:49.276 --> 00:08:53.960 Where shame says that God can never love a person like you. 84 00:08:57.520 --> 00:09:10.400 Conviction, spiritually speaking, is focused on facts while shame is focused on feelings. 85 00:09:11.220 --> 00:09:15.750 That's hard for us because the fact is, yes, that I did this. 86 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:18.470 The fact is, yes, that I thought this. 87 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:21.190 The fact is, yes, that I said this. 88 00:09:21.720 --> 00:09:31.240 And I'm not talking about the fact of what we have done or what we haven't done, but I'm talking about the facts of who we are in Christ. 89 00:09:31.310 --> 00:09:51.170 And so shame seeks to grab ahold of the feelings which the Bible teaches us that the heart can be deceptive for us, that our feelings can keep us bound instead of the truth of God's word, of who God is and what God's done and what God wants to do in your life. 90 00:09:52.260 --> 00:09:55.040 And so that's the beauty of conviction. 91 00:09:55.540 --> 00:10:12.468 That's the beauty of getting caught, that's the beauty of getting called out is that I'm a forgiven child of God and that this is what God desires to do in me and this is what God desires to do through me. 92 00:10:12.634 --> 00:10:19.050 Whereas shame says, no, see, this is really who you are. 93 00:10:19.820 --> 00:10:21.530 That's not who you are. 94 00:10:22.060 --> 00:10:23.524 You're unworthy. 95 00:10:23.652 --> 00:10:28.110 God could never and would never love you. 96 00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:36.270 And the reality is that so many of us have fallen into this pattern, right? 97 00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:38.460 Convict shame. 98 00:10:38.800 --> 00:10:50.930 What shame will do is lead to anxiety, fear, depression, broken relationships, masking and a greater whole of sin in our life. 99 00:10:51.640 --> 00:11:02.710 But conviction leads to brokenness, remorse, repentance and spiritual maturity is what conviction brings us to. 100 00:11:03.400 --> 00:11:20.590 And God often allows us, as we mature even to experience the beauty of conviction before the fullness of the manifestation of sin in our life, right? 101 00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:34.844 And so, hopefully, on our journey with the Lord, what we notice probably very early on in our relationship with Him is that we did something, we thought something we said something and the Lord said, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. 102 00:11:34.892 --> 00:11:38.130 Here's the conviction of my Holy Spirit, right? 103 00:11:38.580 --> 00:11:58.170 But as we mature in Him, what we begin to experience is as we go to think, as we go to speak, as we go to feel, we're led and as we're led by the Holy Spirit, what we begin to experience is the conviction of the Holy Spirit prior to this. 104 00:11:59.180 --> 00:12:01.256 And that's the freedom that we experience. 105 00:12:01.358 --> 00:12:04.330 That's the growth that we have. 106 00:12:05.260 --> 00:12:10.940 But what we see in the life of Noah right here is that he sins. 107 00:12:11.760 --> 00:12:18.460 And from his sin will start a path of shame and a path of sin. 108 00:12:19.060 --> 00:12:20.610 Let's look at verse 22. 109 00:12:23.140 --> 00:12:31.890 And Ham, the father of Canaan saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside. 110 00:12:33.140 --> 00:12:43.072 Then Shim and Japeth took a garment and laid it on their shoulders and walked backwards and covered the nakedness of their father. 111 00:12:43.216 --> 00:12:49.796 Their faces were turned backwards and they did not see their father's nakedness. 112 00:12:49.908 --> 00:12:56.490 So now what we are seeing here is one sin, the sin of Noah that we talked about. 113 00:12:57.280 --> 00:13:01.020 And we're going to see two different responses. 114 00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:03.164 I thought this was interesting. 115 00:13:03.282 --> 00:13:10.088 This isn't the first time that we've seen in the account of Genesis this pattern of sin. 116 00:13:10.264 --> 00:13:12.256 In fact, when you look back at. 117 00:13:12.278 --> 00:13:21.472 Genesis three I'm sorry, genesis three, when Adam and Eve were found in their sin by the Lord, that the account talks about, that Adam, right?
