Series Title: The Road to Resurrection
Sermon: "The Entry of the King"
Scripture: John 12:12-15
“The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.””
John 12:12-15 NIV
INTRODUCTION: "What does it mean to say, 'Jesus is King'?"
The significance of Jesus riding a donkey (fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9).
The significance of the response of the crowd and their expectations of a political savior versus a spiritual one.
The three significant effects of Jesus' kingship and what it means for us today as we look toward Easter Sunday!
1. Jesus as King signifies His ultimate authority over all aspects of life. Christians are called to submit to His lordship, acknowledging His sovereignty in decisions and actions.
Matthew
28:18 - "And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.'"
2. Being part of the Kingdom of God gives Christians a new identity as children of the King. This understanding shapes their self-perception and influences how they relate to others.
1 Peter 2:9 - "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
3. Jesus’ kingship calls Christians to serve others, reflecting His servant leadership. This means prioritizing humility and service over power and dominance.
- Mark 10:43-45 - "But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
CONCLUSION: These three effects encourage Christians to live in a way that honors Jesus' kingship, influencing their actions, relationships, and overall lifestyle.
