स्नेहस्य तत्त्वम्

कस्यचन राज्ञः चिन्ता आसीत् यत् स्वस्य द्वयोः पुत्रयोः कः तस्य उत्तराधिकारी भवेत् इति । तौ परीक्षितुं पञ्चाशत्सहस्रं सुवर्णनाणकानि दत्त्वा 'वर्षाभ्यन्तरे पञ्चाशति ग्रामेषु अस्मद्वासयोग्यानि गृहाणि निर्मातव्यानि' इति अवदत् । वर्षम् अतीतम् । अल्पेन धनेन अल्पेन कालेन च सम्पूर्णगृहनिर्माणकार्यं कर्तुं न शक्तम् इति ज्येष्ठः पुत्रः अवदत् । द्वितीयः पुत्रः तु राज्ञा दत्तं समग्रमपि धनं प्रत्यर्प्य अवद्त् 'पञ्चाशदधिकेषु ग्रामेषु मया सुहृदः सम्पादिताः । ते सर्वे अस्मान् स्वागतीकृत्य आतिथ्यादिना सत्करिष्यन्ति' इति । यत्र आत्मीयाः‌ सुहृदः स्युः तत्र स्वीयस्य गृहस्य न आवश्यकता । राज्ञि एषः गुणः अवश्यमेव भवेत् इत्युक्त्वा द्वितीयपुत्रम् उत्तराधिकारित्वेन नियोजितवान् राजा ।

A king tested his two sons by giving them money to build houses in fifty villages. The elder son failed, saying it was impossible.
