about, I had trouble"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":218.6,"endTime":221.72,"body":"taking a step on an escalator because of compensate for my eyesight"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":228.41,"endTime":230.48,"body":"and for how I was seeing the world."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":230.48,"endTime":233.0,"body":"And I can never talk to anybody about it because"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":233.0,"endTime":235.7,"body":"how do you explain how you see and how other"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":235.7,"endTime":237.38,"body":"people aren't seeing the same way?"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":237.41,"endTime":239.51,"body":"I just always felt that it was hard for me"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":239.9,"endTime":241.82,"body":"to learn, so I would go and sit in the"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":241.82,"endTime":242.78,"body":"front of the class."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":243.26,"endTime":246.56,"body":"I would dig in the garbage for the teacher's handouts"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":246.56,"endTime":247.67,"body":"and take them home."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":248.09,"endTime":249.8,"body":"And then I would sit in my room and I"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":249.8,"endTime":251.15,"body":"would teach the class again."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":251.3,"endTime":252.8,"body":"So I'd go to school all day and then I'd"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":252.8,"endTime":254.87,"body":"go home and I would teach it in a different"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":254.87,"endTime":257.69,"body":"way then, to invisible students."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":258.049,"endTime":259.97,"body":"Mom would come in and go, Who's over at this"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":259.97,"endTime":260.329,"body":"house?"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":260.34,"endTime":263.36,"body":"I'd say, Oh, nobody, Mom, just teaching my lessons again."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":263.96,"endTime":265.31,"body":"And doing that really helped me."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":265.31,"endTime":267.65,"body":"It was a learning strategy that helped me to get"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":267.65,"endTime":268.01,"body":"through."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":268.01,"endTime":272.51,"body":"But all of these experiences gave me empathy and compassion"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":272.51,"endTime":274.97,"body":"that I ended up needing in my teaching career."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":274.97,"endTime":278.06,"body":"When I was really new as an English teacher, I"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":278.06,"endTime":281.09,"body":"was super, super poor, and the only job I could"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":281.09,"endTime":284.3,"body":"get was teaching high school students who were bused out of"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":284.3,"endTime":288.17,"body":"Washington, D.C., to a school in Brandywine, Maryland."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":288.18,"endTime":290.24,"body":"So I was so excited."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":290.24,"endTime":292.88,"body":"Like it was the best job in the whole world,"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":293.18,"endTime":295.49,"body":"but I had no idea the challenges I was about"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":295.49,"endTime":296.15,"body":"to face."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":296.27,"endTime":298.22,"body":"The first day of school I got there at 5"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":298.22,"endTime":300.38,"body":"a.m. and I sat at my desk."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":300.38,"endTime":302.96,"body":"I was so excited I actually fell asleep and what"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":302.96,"endTime":305.12,"body":"woke me up was the busses pulling in and I"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":305.12,"endTime":306.59,"body":"was like, Oh, I better get ready."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":306.59,"endTime":309.26,"body":"And I welcomed these students in who were way taller"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":309.26,"endTime":312.35,"body":"than me, and then I welcomed the police officer in"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":313.07,"endTime":313.64,"body":"every day."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":313.64,"endTime":315.32,"body":"We had a police officer in the back of the"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":315.32,"endTime":317.9,"body":"classroom, and his job was to watch the parking lot"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":318.32,"endTime":321.14,"body":"because many of my students had hits out on them"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":321.14,"endTime":324.41,"body":"and it was a dangerous place to be."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":324.8,"endTime":327.95,"body":"So I thought, All right, I'll start with something that"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":327.95,"endTime":330.71,"body":"maybe these students who've seen violence, maybe they could relate"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":330.71,"endTime":331.13,"body":"to it."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":331.43,"endTime":332.75,"body":"I'll start with telling."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":380.93,"endTime":383.45,"body":"So they changed me as a teacher and I thought,"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":383.9,"endTime":384.58,"body":"All went to Canada and I started teaching"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":415.97,"endTime":418.34,"body":"in Canada with the students who struggled."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":418.64,"endTime":421.82,"body":"So they always every principal always gave me classrooms full"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":421.82,"endTime":423.17,"body":"of students who struggled."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":423.17,"endTime":425.69,"body":"And I had great empathy for them."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":425.69,"endTime":429.19,"body":"And I learned about Canada very quickly."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":429.2,"endTime":431.27,"body":"I tried to travel around."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":431.27,"endTime":433.7,"body":"I went from coast to coast trying to figure out"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":433.7,"endTime":436.49,"body":"what Canada was about in the provinces."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":436.49,"endTime":437.69,"body":"They were, there was so mad at me."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":437.69,"endTime":439.67,"body":"They were like, You don't even know the provinces."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":439.67,"endTime":440.62,"body":"You're an American."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":440.66,"endTime":442.31,"body":"I'm like, All right, let me learn them."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":442.31,"endTime":444.71,"body":"I'll know them by Monday because I'd show up Monday"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":444.71,"endTime":446.9,"body":"with more knowledge and just try to figure out Canada."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":450.5,"endTime":455.78,"body":"I felt like literacy, practice and education was ten years"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":455.9,"endTime":458.51,"body":"forward then the U.S.."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":459.32,"endTime":459.8,"body":"Wow."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":460.07,"endTime":463.91,"body":"Everything I learned in the U.S. was nothing compared with"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":463.91,"endTime":465.32,"body":"what they were doing in Canada."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":465.35,"endTime":466.91,"body":"So I had a lot to learn."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":466.94,"endTime":469.97,"body":"I had to do overnight work."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":469.97,"endTime":471.83,"body":"I had to take extra courses."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":471.83,"endTime":475.76,"body":"I had to learn how to be accountable for what"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":475.76,"endTime":476.57,"body":"I was teaching."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":476.57,"endTime":479.9,"body":"And I had to overcome a lot of my own"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":480.05,"endTime":484.28,"body":"struggles to learn and library."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":492.44,"endTime":495.89,"body":"And this guy, he was 59 or 60 years old"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":496.43,"endTime":499.04,"body":"and he was shaking and he looked scared."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":499.04,"endTime":500.78,"body":"I thought, Oh gosh, this guy's going to be a"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":500.78,"endTime":501.65,"body":"terrible speaker."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":502.46,"endTime":503.84,"body":"And I looked at my students."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":503.84,"endTime":505.85,"body":"I gave him that teacher, Look, don't you dare do"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":505.85,"endTime":506.69,"body":"anything wrong."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":506.78,"endTime":509.03,"body":"So he starts talking and he said, My name is"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":509.03,"endTime":509.99,"body":"Arnie Stewart."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":510.14,"endTime":513.349,"body":"And I was in grade one for two years."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":513.5,"endTime":515.05,"body":"Grade two for two years."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":515.06,"endTime":517.849,"body":"Grade three for two years, four for two years."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":518.24,"endTime":519.71,"body":"Grade five for life and how he lived in a parked car"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":531.21,"endTime":531.93,"body":"for a while."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":531.93,"endTime":534.48,"body":"He ate food out of a garbage can to survive."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":535.17,"endTime":538.32,"body":"He but his trick was he always bluffed his way"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":538.32,"endTime":538.74,"body":"through."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":539.07,"endTime":541.65,"body":"So instead of reading the signs to go anywhere, he"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":541.65,"endTime":543.87,"body":"would just get in behind the bus and follow the"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":543.87,"endTime":547.31,"body":"bus wherever he was going. To get his driver's license,"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":547.32,"endTime":550.29,"body":"he took it seven times and every time he would"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":550.29,"endTime":552.9,"body":"mark a different box until he finally passed."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":553.89,"endTime":557.04,"body":"He was like the this extensive education background, but also"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1147.59,"endTime":1149.09,"body":"the video stuff pushed me accessibility stuff is a big deal knowing video production,"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1164.3,"endTime":1167.72,"body":"but not just the production piece but the practice long, kill me now, like it's the worst."},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1180.2,"endTime":1182.51,"body":"And I said, Why don't we put in some best"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1182.51,"endTime":1184.15,"body":"practice training underneath it?"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1184.16,"endTime":1187.7,"body":"Why don't we talk to instructors about the purpose of"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1187.7,"endTime":1190.28,"body":"their content and the placement of their content?"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1191.12,"endTime":1194.09,"body":"And then we'll talk to them about let's focus on"},{"speaker":"Janet","startTime":1194.09,"endTime":1198.14,"body":"a topic,
