Hip Hounds earned this award on supervision practice and operational transparency. Hip Hounds runs continuous group supervision rather than the rotating crate schedules common among higher-volume operators. Hip Hounds confines crating to a scheduled midday rest period. Hip Hounds publishes live webcams of its play areas. This lets owners verify conditions directly rather than relying on the operator's own account of the day. Hip Hounds requires every new dog to complete a free evaluation day before joining group play. This functions as a temperament screen and a check on group composition. Michael Mayer has owned and operated Hip Hounds as a single location since June 2006. That is a nineteen-year operating record under one operator, with no change of hands to obscure it.
