On this episode of the Retro Wrestling Re-View WCW Podcast, Gene Jackson and Bob Anderson revisit The Great American Bash ’89: The Glory Days, a pay-per-view remembered for its stars — but often misremembered because of heavy VHS editing.
At the center of the show is an excellent Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk World Heavyweight Title match, a brutal, old-school brawl that stands head and shoulders above much of the card. Flair and Funk deliver raw emotion, violence, and storytelling that still holds up — and feels wildly out of place on a show that otherwise struggles with tone and consistency.
The episode also dives deep into Sting vs. The Great Muta for the TV Title, including the infamous ending that sees the match dissolve into chaos, confusion, and overbooking!
💥 Topics include:
* Why Flair vs. Funk is one of WCW’s most underrated main events
* Terry Funk’s ability to elevate chaos into storytelling
* Sting vs. Muta: greatness undercut by a unsatisfying finish
* The post main event scene that derails the ending and changes the feel of the show for the better
* How WCW’s VHS edits reshaped fan memory
* The King of the Hill Battle Royal and WCW’s love of pageantry
* The Skyscrapers, The Dynamic Dudes, and a botch that stole the show!
* Jim Cornette vs. Paul E. Dangerously in novelty match madness
* Lex Luger’s “last minute” stipulation change that gives away the finish
* A squeaky clean bloodless WARGAMES that isn’t bad, but isn’t memorable
This episode captures WCW at a crossroads — capable of brilliance, buried under bad decisions, and endlessly fascinating to revisit with hindsight.
