Welcome, dear friends. Today, let's explore a thought-provoking passage from Pirkei Avot, "Ethics of Our Fathers", Chapter 1, Mishnah 15: Shammai says, "Make your Torah study a fixed practice; say little and do much, and receive everyone with a cheerful face.” The first part of this Mishnah reminds us to make our study of Torah a regular, fixed part of our lives – not just something we do when we have spare time. Just as we wouldn't miss a meal or a good night's sleep, we shouldn't miss our daily dose of Torah learning. Now, Shammai's second piece of advice is "say little, do much.” This is a timeless piece of wisdom that applies to all aspects of life. It tells us to let our actions speak louder than our words, to commit to deeds rather than merely making promises. And finally, "receive everyone with a cheerful face." This teaches us the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their status or the circumstances. A warm smile, a friendly greeting can make a world of difference to someone's day. Let us strive to incorporate these teachings into our daily lives - to be consistent in our learning, to be men and women of action, and to greet all with warmth and kindness.
