Here is encouragement to persevere against sin, looking to Jesus as the author and perfecter of faith, where such effort serves as discipline that we "may be partakers of his holiness." Another caution is given to "see that you don't refuse him who speaks," indicating that the writer had concerns that some of those participating in the fellowship (and as such receiving this letter) had not yet responded to the call of what Jesus did on the cross.
