अपूर्वं भिक्षापात्रम्

प्रातः प्रथमं राजगृहं प्रविष्टवते भिक्षुकाय सुवर्णमुद्राः, तदनन्तरं आगतेभ्यः भिक्षुकेभ्यः रजतमुद्राः दीयन्ते स्म भोजमहाराजस्य शासनकाले । एकस्मिन् दिने अगवते भिक्षुकाय राज्ञा दत्ताभिः सुवर्णमुद्राभिः लघु भिक्षापात्रं पूर्णं न अभवत् । एतेन राज्ञा ज्ञातं यत् आगतः भिक्षुकः सामान्यः न, अपि च परीक्षार्थमेव आगतः इति । अतः तं पादस्पर्शपूर्वकं नमस्कृत्य तत् पात्रं केन निर्मितमिति पृष्टवान् । तदा हसन् सः भिक्षुकः कानिचन हितवचनानि उक्तवान् । तत् श्रुत्वा राजा वदति - 'जीवने भवान् प्रथमः जनः यः मां सन्तोषस्य अर्थं बोधितवान् । भवान् मम ज्ञानचक्षुषी उन्मीलितवान् । धन्योऽस्मि' इति ।

"In the reign of King Bhoja, the first beggar to enter the royal palace in the morning would receive gold coins, and subsequent beggars would be given silver coins. One day, the small begging bowl of a beggar who arrived first did not fill up despite the king's gift of gold coins. From this, the king realized that the beggar was not an ordinary person but had come to test him. Therefore, the king bowed down and respectfully touched the feet of the beggar, asking who had made the bowl. Smiling, the beggar spoke some kind words. Hearing this, the king said, 'In my life, you are the first person who has taught me the meaning of contentment. You have opened my eyes of wisdom. I am grateful.'
