Paul has been building toward this moment for the whole sermon. Wide lens on creation, closer lens on providence, common ground through the poets. Now he narrows the lens to a point that can't be avoided. If we are God's offspring, we can't shrink him down to gold or silver or stone. Every idol in Athens was theological regression, humans reducing the infinite to something manageable. Then Paul pivots and drops the word that would have shocked his audience: "commands." God commands all people everywhere to repent. The Athenians were used to philosophies presented as options for debate. Paul delivers a summons instead. And then comes the line the Greeks couldn't cross: God has proven it by raising a man from the dead. The response splits three ways, which are still the three responses people give today. Some mocked. Some delayed. Some believed, including a member of the Areopagus council and a woman named Damaris. In this episode, polite procrastination turns out to be its own kind of refusal.
