The original version of this saying actually makes better sense: you can't eat your cake and still have it. Once it's consumed, it's gone. The saying isn't about denial. The beach house is appealing. The maintenance schedule that comes with it is not. Both are part of the same transaction.
This is where the compasses demand something more rigorous than simple self-control. They require you to see both dimensions of any ambition: the enjoyment and the responsibility that is inseparable from it. Robert Heinlein's line that there's no such thing as a free lunch captures the same truth. Every benefit has a cost, even if that cost is social, temporal, or indirect. The person who wants only the upside without accounting for the downside hasn't used the compass at all.
Brian also draws on the well-worn joke about boat ownership, the two happiest days being the day you buy and the day you sell, as a culturally shared signal that we already understand this principle. We just forget to apply it consistently before we commit to the thing we want.
For every desire the compasses help you pursue, they also ask you to honestly account for everything that comes with it.
